This unit is a bridged unit with a HEPA air filtration system, designed to protect immunosuppressed patients from airborne infections. Nurses provide care for patients undergoing autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplants and peripheral stem cell infusions. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery, or through end of life. As part of the Mayo Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs. The unit has two pods, Pod A with six inpatient private rooms, one outpatient double room, and four private outpatient rooms, plus two outpatient exam rooms. Pod B has eight private inpatient rooms, two of which are set up for isolation with ante rooms. One isolation room has the capability of reversing the air flow to negative pressure. Nurses on the unit have additional education to provide services including apheresis/marrow harvest preparatory regimens, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, intensive supportive therapies for immunocompromised patients, and stem cell and marrow infusions. Emotional support and patient/family teaching are important care components for these often acutely ill patients. The Mayo Nursing Care Model is used for care delivery. Patients are followed as a hospital-based outpatient on our unit, prior to transplant and after transplant.
