About The Position

The Registered Nurse 2 delivers patient-family centered care in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service while ensuring population-specific patient care. The Registered Nurse 2 oversees nurses and allied health staff in their daily practice. This role also involves meeting requirements of Clinical Trials Senior Chemotherapy Nurse, administering research study agents, standard chemotherapy and biotherapy agents, and non-chemotherapy medications, monitoring therapeutic responses and side effects, and obtaining pharmacokinetic blood samples and other laboratory specimens as required by each protocol. The nurse will assist in maintaining up-to-date protocol information, document concisely and accurately, meet study timelines, and support patients and their families during trial treatment. Additionally, the role encompasses the full nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and professional accountability, including maintaining confidentiality, acting as a role model, developing clinical competency, and adhering to all University and department policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in nursing required
  • Registered Nurse License
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and procedures (i.e. sanitation, decontamination etc.)
  • Excellent patient experience skills
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

Responsibilities

  • Assesses assigned patients and evaluates plans to include documentation of nursing care.
  • Reports symptoms and changes in patients’ condition and vital signs.
  • Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients’ responses, conditions and physician orders.
  • Reviews, evaluates and reports diagnostic tests to assess patient’s condition.
  • Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals related to assigned patients to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Prepares patients for, and assists with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Considers patient age and culture during patient treatments and provides any needed information regarding treatment plan.
  • Nurtures a compassionate environment by providing psychological support.
  • Performs appropriate patient tests and safely administers medications within the scope of practice.
  • Administers and maintains accurate records related to medications and treatments as per regulatory bodies, policies, procedures and physician orders.
  • Communicates plan of care in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines (i.e. HIPAA).

  • Provides documentation to the Research Nurse and/or Data Manager.
  • Meets study timelines and objectives as defined by protocols.
  • Abides by requirements in accordance with the Oncology Nursing Society’s Manual for Clinical Trials Nursing.
  • Supports patients and their families during trial treatment.
  • Works with research nurse and principal investigator to educate patients and their families about their treatment and protocol requirements.
  • Follow policies and procedures for clinical trials.
  • Performs assessments and reassessments focusing on the physical and psychosocial health status of the patient in an ongoing timely and systematic manner.
  • Obtains baseline information utilized for the development of individualized patient plan of care.
  • Provides direct and indirect patient and family care to assess needs.
  • Facilitates/patient/family education with interdisciplinary team involvement.
  • Monitors patient’s progress against plan of care until discharge from designated patient care area.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to identify potential barriers and variances to the plan of care.
  • Coordinates the plan of care with patients, family and interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensures the plan of care is accessible to the patient and family to assist them in understanding goals of care and movement toward these goals.
  • Plans discharge and teaching needs as applicable.
  • Promotes development of clinical practice based on research and evidence.
  • Assists leadership team with maintenance of initial and ongoing unit-based clinical competencies.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, caregivers and community resources.
  • Educates interdisciplinary team, patient/family on plan of care.
  • Serves as a direct care provider, as appropriate, to ensure outcome obtainment.
  • Documents concise, accurate and legible according to nursing policies and procedures and nursing standards.
  • Provides patient/family teaching using available resources and tools.
  • Acts as consultant to clinical staff in assisting with unfamiliar procedures/treatments.
  • Utilizes process of performance improvement.
  • Promotes patient safety.
  • Communicates changes in plan of care to the patient/family and the health care team members in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used meds: action, dose, and side effects.
  • Observes five Rights for administering meds: right patient, right drug, right dose, right method, and right time.
  • Medication Administration as per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Evaluates patient for improvement after implementation of plan of care to assess for the attainment of goals.
  • Readjusts plan of care based on evaluation of the patients’/families’ needs.
  • Monitors outcomes of patients undergoing new procedures or interventions.
  • Evaluates staff competencies and reports to leadership team.
  • Participates in staff evaluations.
  • Consistently maintain complete confidentiality of all medical, financial, employee, computer and other sensitive materials, which may violate HIPAA regulations and/or jeopardize the privacy of others.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
