The Registered Food & Nutrition Dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy for inpatient and, as needed, outpatient populations. The dietitian screens and prioritizes patients, assesses nutritional status, develops individualized plans of care, recommends interventions, and documents care in the electronic medical record in accordance with clinical documentation and coding standards. The role adapts its workflow to changes in census, consults, acuity, and staffing needs. The dietitian prescribes and manages therapeutic diets, oral nutrition supplements, and enteral and parenteral nutrition support within the scope of the Medical Nutrition Therapy protocol. This includes calculating nutrient, fluid, and electrolyte needs; evaluating tolerance and effectiveness; and collaborating with physicians, pharmacy, nursing, and food and nutrition services. The role also addresses allergies, diet restrictions, preferences, supply substitutions, and complex patient-specific menus. The position leads efforts to identify, treat, and prevent malnutrition, including performing Nutrition Focused Physical Examinations, documenting findings, and educating patients with moderate or severe malnutrition. The dietitian contributes to quality improvement, regulatory readiness, nutrition-related documentation and billing, interdisciplinary care planning, discharge transitions, patient and teammate education, and system-wide clinical nutrition initiatives. The role may support hospital-based outpatient programs, precept students and medical residents, and provide coverage at other sites as needed.
