About The Position

The Registered Dietitian (Bariatric Services) position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and coordinating all phases of nutritional care for outpatients and inpatients within the weight management center, focusing on obesity medicine and bariatric surgery. Key duties include Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Care Plan Development & Follow Up, Nutrition Education, and Nutrition Counseling for weight loss management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition or a related field
  • Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently to prioritize patient care
  • Ability to work well as part of the Bariatric team and Weight Loss Management Center

Responsibilities

  • Performs nutrition assessments in accordance with NJ State Health Code and/or policy and procedure for Bariatric Services and Weight Loss Management, triaging patients into appropriate levels of care and determining follow-up intervention intensity.
  • Assesses bariatric surgery patients by screening medical records, completing comprehensive assessments based on medical record data and patient interviews, and considering religious, cultural, and ethnic preferences.
  • Recommends appropriate nutrition interventions to bariatric surgery patients preoperatively and postoperatively based on subjective and objective information, adapting orders to individual needs and patient's educational level, cultural, and religious preferences.
  • Attends and actively participates in interdisciplinary conferences, multidisciplinary clinical rounds, peer reviews, and discharge planning, working closely with the Weight Management Team and Bariatric team.
  • Maintains accurate nutritional records and communicates appropriate nutritional care to the primary care physician or designee.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency by maintaining 15 CEU's per year, participating in peer review and cross-training educational activities.
  • Develops and implements clinical research projects collaboratively with the Bariatric and Weight Loss Management team.
  • Educates patients and family members on nutritional requirements and therapy based on cultural, religious, and ethnic preferences, individualizing materials based on patient's age and comprehension levels.
  • Provides appropriate resources and education according to identified needs, documenting education provided, evidence of family teaching, measurable understanding, and anticipated compliance.
  • Participates in patient group teaching as assigned.
  • Serves as a nutrition educator by providing education, lectures, and programs to University Hospital staff, patients, and the community.
  • Evaluates and develops nutrition education materials with post tests to support client learning and ability to provide self-care.
