About The Position

San Francisco State University's Student Health Services (SHS) is seeking a Registered Dietitian (RD) to promote health equity and support the academic, personal, and professional success of its community. The RD will assess patients' nutritional risks and deficiencies, provide medical nutrition therapy and education on healthy eating habits, and collaborate with SHS and other health professionals to coordinate care plans. This role operates within an ethnically and culturally diverse educational environment, aiming to positively influence the campus culture around health and wellness to empower students in making informed health decisions.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of nutrition, dietary needs and weight control.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to the field including those regarding patient confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of nutritional care for specific medical conditions.
  • General knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and channels of nutrition education and public information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to assess needs and evaluate the effectiveness of diet and nutrition programs and materials.
  • Ability to promote, organize, and conduct public meetings on nutrition.
  • Ability to prepare, select, assemble, evaluate, and distribute nutrition education material such as pamphlets, reports, bulletins, exhibits, posters, films, and news releases.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative health care teams to address specific diet and nutrition needs.
  • Ability to keep current with developments in health care related to nutrition.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff and representatives of the news media and other community groups.
  • Ability to be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse members of the campus community.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a program approved and accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Completion of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited pre-professional experience program.
  • Sufficient experience to perform the assigned duties.
  • Possess and maintain certification as a Registered Dietitian as defined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Incumbent must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree required for Registered Dietitians (RDs) who obtained registration after January 1, 2024.
  • ACHA-approved master’s degree preferred.
  • 1–2 years of progressively responsible health education and clinical nutrition experience.
  • Experience working with college students, higher education populations, or community settings.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and coordinating nutrition education and healthy eating programs for individuals and groups.
  • Experience serving diverse, multicultural, and ethnically varied populations.
  • Knowledge of clinical nutrition and Nutrition Care Standards from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and healthcare technology.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret health education and program data.
  • Ability to assess needs, establish priorities, and develop health promotion programs.
  • Experience planning, implementing, evaluating, and improving health education initiatives.
  • Skilled in creating educational materials, workshops, discussion groups, and multimedia resources.
  • Knowledge of health education theories, health equity principles, and program evaluation methods.
  • Knowledge of health promotion standards and best practices in higher education.
  • Knowledge of college student health issues and evidence-based intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of educational and social psychology principles relevant to health education.
  • Familiarity with ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to present information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with students, healthcare professionals, media representatives, and community partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and activities simultaneously.
  • Skilled in using computer and web-based technologies for research and education.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and commitment to inclusive, student-centered services.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the clinical nutrition needs of patients.
  • Develop and document nutritional care plans within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nutrition care plans based on clinical findings, lab results, weight trends, intake, and comorbidities.
  • Provide nutrition education and counseling to patients.
  • Provide community resources to support patient needs.
  • Provide staff education (ad hoc) on updated protocols, best practice, and trends.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to determine individualized care plans that improve a patient’s overall health and well-being.
  • Ensure adherence to State and Federal regulations and institution standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
