About The Position

Responsible for traffic engineering for the geographic Region assigned. Coordinates extensively with the District Administers and Engineers within the region along with traffic safety and the RSA teams. Exercises considerable and significant independent engineering judgment within established program parameters, policies and procedures, and is the ADOT traffic engineering liaison within the Region. Manages all personnel within the unit including other engineers, supervisors, and non-supervisory staff involved in traffic engineering. Extended hours may be required. Overnight travel may be required. This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.   • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Arizona PE Licensure is required for this position.
  • A candidate who holds an active PE in another state will be required to meet registration requirements set forth by the Arizona Technical Board of Registration and attain an Arizona PE from the Board within 6 months of employment start date.

  • PTOE through ITE and/or significant experience in traffic engineering is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Manage staff in relation to developer traffic impact analysis (TIAs) as well as traffic control, temporary traffic control, signal warrants, striping plans & other traffic engineering needs for encroachment permits.
  • Negotiate access control & manage access within & adjacent to ADOT rights-of-way.
  • Recommend improvements to work programs and staffing levels/roles.
  • Represent the regions within project planning and plan development via coordination with Internal PDO, Multimodal Planning Division (MPD), and local agencies.
  • Serve on a wide variety of technical advisory committees for projects that will have impacts on safety and mobility.
  • Serve on project selection panels or agency committees representing the regions.
  • Manage and train staff in traffic engineering such as signal studies, speed studies, pedestrian crossing studies, lighting, traffic safety, RSAs and recommend corrective measures to existing or potential traffic engineering problems.
  • Regularly review roadways within geographic Region to determine traffic operations improvements.
  • Direct staff to write work orders to correct identified issues.
  • Act as a technical expert at public forums, work sessions, & other public meetings to address traffic engineering & safety related issues.
  • Speak on behalf of ADOT to provide positions on policy & procedures.
  • Respond to public requests for traffic information & improvements.
  • Provide records, depositions, & testimony in court related to traffic engineering & maintenance on the state highway system.
