About The Position

Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc. is seeking a Regional Process Safety Manager to join their HSE&S Regional Team. This role is responsible for deploying Process Safety functional excellence and the company's PSM (Process Safety Manager) common platform within their assigned region(s). The position involves capability building, identifying and developing site-level PSM experts, coordinating regional assurance activities, and contributing to the design of global PSM processes and tools under the supervision of the Global Health, Safety, Security Director. The role supports the identification, prioritization, mitigation, and management of process safety risks, and provides expertise to sites on PSM requirements, hazardous area classification, PHA/hazard studies, LOPA, SIS analysis, static electricity prevention, and safe handling of hazardous substances. The manager will also lead or participate in incident investigations and audits, and act as a regional representative for global PSM initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field of study.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in the chemical process industry at a large manufacturing facility in a process safety, engineering, senior operations, or other technical role.
  • Demonstrated experience with PHA (Process Hazard Analysis) and LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis).
  • Demonstrated experience validating the quality of hazard studies and proposed solutions by sites.
  • Demonstrated experience working with site and regional management on prioritization of capex budgets for process safety improvements and PSM related regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with stakeholders to define PSM strategy for a region in line with global PSM strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience working in plants with hazardous substance utilization and handling.
  • Demonstrated experience with principles of process safety management in line with legal requirements and recommended by industry practice.
  • Demonstrated experience working on safety, health and environment (HSE) management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement, root cause analysis, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience working and guiding others within a matrix organization toward a desired goal or course of action.
  • Demonstrated experience gaining agreement or acceptance of plans and activities by specialists and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy Process Safety functional excellence and the company's PSM common platform within the region.
  • Conduct PSM related capability building activities with site-level contacts.
  • Identify, coach, develop, and manage site-level PSM expert pools.
  • Help sites deliver PSM objectives and ensure critical PSM processes are embedded.
  • Coordinate regional PSM assurance activities.
  • Co-design global PSM processes, tools, and initiatives.
  • Support the identification, risk-based prioritization, mitigation, and management of process safety risks.
  • Support sites in delivering PSM targets and common platform objectives.
  • Provide expertise to sites regarding understanding and implementation of company and regulatory PSM requirements, Hazardous Area classification, PHA/hazard study, LOPA, SIS analysis, static electricity prevention practice, resin manufacturing, and solvent/combustible powder safe handling.
  • Facilitate PSM capability building, including faculty trainings and PSM-related topic training.
  • Lead or participate in the investigation of HSES incidents and corporate HSES audits.
  • Contribute to the design of global PSM common platform programs, tools, and templates.
  • Act as a regional representative to provide valuable input for global PSM initiatives.
  • Identify, coach, and manage regional PSM expert pools.
