About The Position

Under the general direction of Pharmacy management, a pharmacy coordinator develops and continuously improves workflow systems which effectively utilize resources to deliver quality service in a cost-effective manner. Assumes specific responsibilities for a designated work area or function as determined by management staff. Coordinates the ongoing daily activities of the professional and technical staff and performs related work as a registered pharmacist. Duties include staff scheduling and monitoring compliance with the Health System Human Resources and department policies and procedures and pertinent state and federal laws and regulations. Consults with customers on a regular basis to identify new opportunities to improve quality, reduce costs and expand services.

Requirements

  • Registered pharmacist possessing or eligible for a Michigan Pharmacist and Controlled Substance license is required.
  • Maintenance of minimum hours of State Board of Pharmacy continuing education credits every two years as required by the State of Michigan.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate drug therapy information to all health team members, patients, and administrators / managers.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Broad knowledge of medications compounding and dispensing.
  • Thorough knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacokinetics and therapeutics.
  • Analytic skills necessary to organize and prioritize multiple job duties.
  • General understanding of computers, including general operations and data retrieval.
  • Commitment to adhere to activities that promote the vision and mission of Trinity Health and the Department of Pharmacy and the principles of continuous quality improvement within the organization.
  • Demonstrated punctual professional demeanor that is willing to work variable hours on a rotating schedule.
  • Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
  • Communication skills necessary for clear written and oral communication.
  • Thorough knowledge of the regulatory, statutory, and professional aspects of pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of pharmacokinetics.
  • Demonstrated teaching ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree or equivalent clinical degree in pharmacy practice is preferred.
  • Management experience in area of practice is preferred.
  • BCOP - Boad Certified Oncology Pharmacist

Responsibilities

  • Exercise functional supervision over medication distribution in designated health system area such as central pharmacy or infusion clinics.
  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of regulatory and licensing requirements.
  • Coordinate the daily activity of the professional and technical staff and functions as a registered pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical services based on age-specific needs and according to professional standards and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure that the daily workload is completed and that all shifts are adequately staffed.
  • Prepare master and daily staffing schedules for pharmacists based on practice site needs including: Assesse staffing model at regular intervals Make adjustments based on current work flow patterns, job responsibilities, staffing levels and staffing mix.
  • Monitor operational issues to effectively integrate and continuously improve operational systems in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Document the performance and assists in the preparation of performance evaluations.
  • Plan, develop, implement and monitor compliance with health system and department policies and procedures.
  • Participate in colleague counseling when necessary based on practice site needs.
  • Document rule infraction and refers to management.
  • Oversee compliance with regulatory agencies for controlled substances including legal requirement, inspections and accountability monitoring.
  • Coordinate and reviews computerized order entry audits and reports.
  • Meet on a regular basis with customers to engage in cost reduction, problem solving, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of operational systems to effectively train employees. This includes coordinating the training process and providing required documentation (for example, training manuals).
  • Issue timely and accurate communication to customers regarding operational changes associated with their primary area of responsibility (for example, memorandums, electronic mail, etc).
  • Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of quality assurance indicators, measures service level and/or compliance achieved, and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of all drugs, IV sets, IV solutions, chemicals, equipment and miscellaneous supplies and communicates fluctuations in usage to the pharmacy purchasers in a timely manner depending on area of practice.
  • Determine the most cost effective and efficient utilization of personnel and supplies.
  • Evaluates alternative drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical software applications, automated equipment, and other technological advances as needed.
  • On a daily basis, monitor the disposition of controlled substances, investigational drugs, and other hazardous materials through daily issuance, inventory control, maintenance of legal documents, and reconciles discrepancies depending on area of practice.
  • Maintain required payroll documentation as required depending on area of practice.
  • Participate in teaching programs affiliated with the pharmacy department.
  • Meet performance expectations for job responsibilities that supplement this job description as assigned to each coordinator specific to a department work area or function.
  • Participate in departmental strategic planning and goal setting activities.
  • Meet with the management staff on a regular basis to discuss operational, clinical and employee relations issues.
  • Participate in the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitor staff adherence to health system policies and procedures and initiates corrective action when appropriate.
