Regional Medical Director | Veterinary Urgent Care

Scout Veterinary Urgent Care

About The Position

The Regional Medical Director (RMD) serves as a key clinical and business leadership partner across their region, supervising the region’s Lead Veterinarians and working closely with Hospital Directors and executive leadership to drive growth, uphold medical excellence, and reinforce Scout’s culture and values across all locations. Scout does not yet have Lead Veterinarians in place at every location; until a given location has one, the RMD directly supervises that location’s staff veterinarians, layering in the Lead Veterinarian as the supervising authority once that role is filled there. This role ensures consistent, high-quality patient care, supports doctor development, strengthens referral partnerships, and serves as the primary point of contact for regional business operations. As Scout continues to grow, dedicated regional operations support may be added alongside this role. Today, the RMD partners directly with executive leadership on business matters, and the scope of this partnership will be reassessed as the organization scales.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) required.
  • 7+ years practicing veterinary medicine.
  • Experience as a Regional Medical Director, Medical Director, or similar leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing business operations, including P&L analysis, staffing, and resource planning.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; able to synthesize multiple perspectives and drive alignment.
  • Strong collaborator who works effectively across diverse personalities and backgrounds.
  • Deep commitment to high medical standards and consistent delivery of quality care.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret practice financials, including P&L statements.
  • Demonstrated servant-leadership philosophy and commitment to supporting team wellbeing.
  • Comfortable operating with organizational ambiguity and adapting to evolving scope and structure as the company scales.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Lead Veterinarians across the region; at locations without a Lead Veterinarian, directly supervise staff veterinarians until that role is filled, then transition day-to-day supervision to the Lead Veterinarian.
  • Establish development plans for all doctors and conduct formal annual performance reviews.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship, coaching, and support to DVMs, especially new hires, to ensure strong onboarding and continuous professional growth.
  • Conduct quarterly one-on-one meetings with each DVM to review production, professional goals, and overall wellbeing and career satisfaction.
  • Participate in monthly doctor meetings to discuss workflow, medical standards, and updates needed to maintain the Scout standard of care.
  • Lead by example with a commitment to professional growth, completing 30–40 hours of CE annually.
  • Partner with Lead DVMs to conduct quarterly medical record audits and ensure adherence to Scout’s medical excellence standards.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Leadership to refine workflows, SOPs, and clinical best practices to ensure consistency across regional clinics.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including DEA requirements.
  • Oversee externship programs to ensure a structured and positive learning experience for students.
  • Represent Scout at Veterinary Colleges within the region to support recruitment and brand visibility.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regional business operations, partnering directly with executive leadership on hospital performance, resourcing, and growth needs.
  • Evaluate hospital inventory, recommended medications, and capital equipment needs, escalating investment decisions to executive leadership as appropriate.
  • Understand and interpret clinic P&L statements for the region, using those insights to inform staffing, growth, and operational decisions.
  • Support Lead DVMs and Hospital Directors in resolving client concerns with professionalism and empathy.
  • Participate in bi-weekly Lead DVM meetings to maintain alignment on standards of care, workflow efficiencies, and regional cross-location consistency.
  • Support Hospital Directors with escalated scheduling or staffing challenges that cannot be resolved at the hospital level; routine doctor scheduling and shift coverage are owned by Hospital Directors.
  • Participate in de novo projects as needed, partnering with executive leadership on medical integration for new locations.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with referral partners through quarterly outreach, CE events, and routine touchpoints that elevate Scout’s presence in the veterinary community.
  • Attend bi-weekly Lead DVM meetings.
  • Attend and facilitate monthly DVM meetings.
  • Participate in recommended leadership and professional development training.
