About The Position

The Massachusetts Trial Court Language Access and Court Records Department is responsible for overseeing court programs and services related to spoken language access to interpreters and translators for the limited English proficient (LEP), low literacy court users, and American Sign Language (ASL) or Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART) for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) individuals with court matters. The office also provides access to administrative records and trial transcripts of digitally recorded court proceedings for the bench, the bar, the public, and pro se, self-represented litigants (SRL). This position requires travel throughout Berkshire, Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin counties. Coordinates, administrates, supervises, and provides oversight of interpreter services in designated county regions and court locations, according to Chapter 221C: Court Interpreters for the Trial Court and the Office of Language Access Standards and Procedures of 2021. Responsible for overseeing that court events are covered and for supervising and providing oversight to interpreters in various court departments and divisions within a specific region. Serves as OLA contact with the Language Access Liaisons. Also serves as an interpreter, performing interpretation and translation services.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
Five (5) years of related work experience.
Interpreter Certification.
Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver's License or possess or have access to other reliable methods of transportation.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for meeting minimum qualifications.
Knowledge of modern office equipment and technology including computers and applicable software.
Knowledge of Departmental and court policies and procedures.
Knowledge of consecutive and simultaneous modes of interpretation, sight translation and translation.
Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision.
Knowledge of Multilingual languages.
Knowledge of Court terminology and decorum.

Responsibilities

Supervises, and provides oversight of interpreter services in designated county regions and court locations.
Assigns daily regional interpreters, including reviewing interpretation and translation assignments in real time.
Provides consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, sight translation, and translation in person or in remote proceedings for all court users.
Facilitates communications between the Office of Language Access (OLA), court personnel, and interpreters.
Consults with their supervisor to resolve issues.
Travels statewide as required for service to court departmental divisions, and to effectively supervise and provide oversight to interpreters.
Working with the Training Manager, provides training and guidance to new and existing Court Interpreters.
Responsible for implementation of the OLA Standards and Procedures and Trial Court’s Language Access Plan.
Acts as a liaison to court departments and other agencies.
Performs other duties as required.
