About The Position

This position manages and supervises a regional library. Leads the branch management team and serves as a liaison to library administration and departments. Promotes relationships with the community. Responds to the needs of library customers and resolves more complex customer issues. Performs all essential information and support duties. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of Fairfax County Public Library. Requirements

  • School and three years of increasingly responsible professional library experience, including two years in a responsible supervisory capacity.
  • Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three (3) months of date of appointment to the position.
  • Ability to supervise multiple large departments, including managers
  • Ability to analyze the needs of the community and to plan, develop, and conduct appropriate services
  • Ability to set goals and objectives
  • Ability to analyze information and prepare a variety of reports
  • General knowledge of statistics and budget preparation
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule workload of the department
  • Ability to effectively select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinates
  • Knowledge of the principles, standards, and practices of library science
  • Knowledge of library reference sources and methods
  • Ability to create or curate professional resources
  • Ability to use professional knowledge to manage the library's collection
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a self-directed workload
  • Ability to provide information service to customers of all ages

  • Supervisory experience to include training, coaching, providing performance evaluations for staff, planning and scheduling workloads for staff.
  • Experience with leading professional-level project teams, presenting high level management reports, budgeting, programming, employee development, branch status and strategic initiatives and community assessment.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual in English and another language.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and directs the services and activities of a regional library
  • Identifies staff development needs and directs in-branch or departmental training programs
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate personnel
  • Facilitates staff meetings
  • Schedules staff and plans workflow to ensure adequate coverage or manages the system collection under the guidance of the Collection Services Coordinator
  • Oversees the management of the branch collection
  • Serves on Branch or Department Management Team
  • Serves as person-in-charge
  • Resolves non-routine patron interactions by communicating and interpreting library policy for staff and the general public
  • Addresses the more difficult and complex reference, and reader advisory services readers advisory and collection questions
  • Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups
  • May develop informational finding tools
  • Answers informational and reference questions from customers using print and electronic resources
  • Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology
  • Advises and assists customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials
  • Plans and provides programs and outreach to customers of all ages
  • Troubleshoots library computers and reports unresolved problems through proper channels
  • Performs copy cataloging of library materials
  • Identifies materials to be considered for addition to the library collection
  • Remains current in resources, services and technologies in the information field
  • May supervise volunteers

Benefits

  • The selected applicant's starting salary offer will be in the minimum to midpoint range of $83,009.89 to $110,679.92 and will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised compensation range.
