The Refuse Collector performs manual work of a routine nature that involves heavy physical labor as a member of a sanitation crew. This role is responsible for maneuvering and positioning garbage carts, loading refuse, yard waste, and approved bulk or special materials into sanitation trucks using manual methods or mechanized equipment. The collector also cleans debris from collection sites and completes assigned routes in accordance with daily schedules and safety procedures. Additionally, the Refuse Collector rides on or assists the sanitation truck during assigned routes, supporting the driver with navigation, safe operations, and efficient route completion. They respond courteously to basic customer questions related to collection services when encountered. The role may involve operating non-CDL equipment, including boom or mechanized collection attachments, and assisting with special refuse, appliance, or oil collection activities. Cleaning sanitation trucks and related equipment is also a key responsibility to maintain operational readiness and safety. The Refuse Collector provides support at City facilities, parks, and community events, assisting with setup, cleanup, or related services. They may also assist the Maintenance Department, Keeping Douglasville Beautiful, or other City divisions with labor support tasks. Guidance or on-the-job instruction to new employees may be provided. This position may require working after hours, weekends, or special events based on operational needs.
