About The Position
The Refrigeration Operator maintains and operates equipment at Simplot’s Grand Forks site, including air compressors, HVAC equipment, and the ammonia refrigeration system. The role performs refrigeration operations and maintenance, defrosts freezer evaporators, troubleshoots a large ammonia facility, and completes preventive maintenance work. It also operates and maintains compressed air, HVAC and AMU units, low oxygen systems, and the fire protection system. The operator supports the plant’s process safety management system, accurately maintains refrigeration and fire protection logs and cold-storage records, and carries out assigned duties during evacuations or other emergencies. Work includes safely using an ammonia full-face gas mask, performing acetylene cutting and heating, and following electrical and valve lockout/tagout procedures. The position requires working with minimal supervision, following company policies and safe work practices, and participating in appropriate training.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 2.5 years of related experience and/or training in a maintenance, mechanical, refrigeration, or industrial environment.
- Basic knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment, including routine maintenance such as changing filters, replacing belts, and completing minor repairs.
- Working knowledge of refrigeration system fundamentals, including the refrigeration cycle.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on maintenance experience, and manual dexterity to safely use tools and perform equipment repairs.
- Ability to obtain CIRO certification within one year of hire.
- Two years of related industrial refrigeration experience or successful completion of a recognized boiler safety training program.
- Required certification to perform basic duties using an ammonia full-face gas mask.

Responsibilities
- Perform refrigeration operations and maintenance at the Grand Forks site, including defrosting freezer evaporators.
- Keep the work area clean and functional and complete assigned work orders.
- Perform assigned duties during plant evacuations or other emergencies, including monitoring the fire sprinkler system.
- Maintain accurate refrigeration logs, fire protection system records, and cold-storage warehouse recorder data.
- Troubleshoot the ammonia facility and perform related preventive maintenance work, including duties requiring two or more employees.
- Operate and maintain compressed air systems, HVAC and AMU units, low oxygen systems, and the fire protection system.
- Support continued progress of the plant process safety management (PSM) system.
- Perform basic duties using an ammonia full-face gas mask; certification is required.
- Perform acetylene cutting and heating safely when repairing and fabricating equipment.
- Follow electrical and valve shutoff lockout/tagout procedures.
- Comply with company policies, procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Attend and participate in training and apply acquired skills and knowledge.
- Maintain professional conduct and appearance while representing the company.
- Handle additional management-assigned accountabilities to meet operational divisional standards.
- Follow safe work practices and policies to prevent injuries to self and others.
- Work with minimal supervision.
