The Galveston Bay Refinery (GBR) has an opening for a Refining Chemist located in Texas City, TX.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 16 hours of college-level chemistry required.
  • Two (2) years or more of chemical analysis and laboratory experience required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to effectively lead or direct team efforts.
  • Familiarity with physical properties testing, gas chromatography, and spectroscopy.
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, properties, and reactions of substances.
  • Understanding of how analytes relate to sample points in the refinery process.
  • Ability to use a personal computer required, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, email and database applications.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to work with mathematical concepts and solve practical problems.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences including management and external vendors.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and plan multiple work activities with varying deadlines and complexities.
  • Ability to respond to changing business requirements and priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Chemistry Degree preferred.
  • Experience in a QC/production laboratory in the petroleum refining/petrochemical industry is preferred.
  • Extensive experience with LIMS, specifically Sample Manager and QC Plus, is preferred.
  • Experience with NIR and Raman instrumentation and modeling is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support to ensure laboratory complies with ASTM D6299 laboratory quality control requirements such as, but not limited to, monitoring statistical quality control (SQC) charts, investigating out of control situations, development of SQC samples, monitoring inter-laboratory proficiency testing, and training.
  • Reviews and interprets data and testing records and QA/QC data validation.
  • Reviews data and instrument logbooks for abnormalities, trends or leading indicators.
  • Promotes and enforces all regulatory and quality assurance compliance programs.
  • Routinely reviews and updates statistical quality control (SQC) charts, and reviews raw data and instrument logbooks for abnormalities, trends or other leading indicators that could cause a future out of control condition.
  • Provides technical, testing and equipment troubleshooting support in the areas of physical analytical and wet chemistry.
  • Provides analytical support to internal and external clients.
  • Responsible for raw materials testing, petroleum product certification, identification of unknowns, environmental monitoring, and EPA compliance testing and stewardship.
  • Oversees testing performed by hourly personnel assigned.
  • Monitors test results for compliance with product and operating specifications.
  • Coordinates crosscheck testing and maintains associated records.
  • Coordinates, hosts, and ensures compliance for internal and external laboratory audits.
  • Interprets analytical data in assigned area.
  • Performs highly specialized on non-routine testing as required.
  • Monitors precision and accuracy of test methods in assigned area.
  • Implements corrections and improvements to test methods, as required.
  • Actively participates in departmental safety program.
  • Sets example for safety awareness.
  • Ensures that all testing equipment in assigned area is well maintained.
  • Recommends new and replacement equipment necessary to meet refinery quality objectives.
  • Maintains professional competency by ongoing training and participation in professional societies.
  • Works with operations and provides technical assistance to identify, investigate and resolve process discrepancies.
  • Properly packs and ships hazardous material to outside labs per DOT and IATA Hazardous Shipping requirements.
  • Implement ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records in assigned areas.
  • Support off-hours duties like plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
