The Referral Support Specialist (RSS) performs primary duties associated with referring patients to internal and external health care resources. Responsible for processing referrals, handling referrals phone calls and closing the loop on referrals. Directly work with patients, hospitals and providers regarding referral processes and appointment requests. RSS will collaborate with all team members on the Referrals, RHS and HIM Teams. RSS presents the best alternatives to providers to expedite referral completion and other assigned duties. The RSS exhibits quality customer service for patients and staff.
Requirements
- Basic computer skills.

- Strong Internet connection, minimum MBPS 75 when working from home.
- Must adhere to hybrid work schedule as required by department.
- Must always adhere to hybrid work guidelines.
- May be required to come on site at any time.
- Must always meet performance expectations.
Nice To Haves
- 1 year of experience in healthcare/medical office or equivalent, a plus.
- Proficiency in medical office Spanish a plus.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office a plus.
- Intermediate EPIC skills a plus.
Responsibilities
- Processes and manages referral requests through Erie’s electronic health record (EHR), verifying patient’s financial status, and verifies appropriate internal and external referral resources according to Erie’s referral guidelines.
- Ensures all needed information is in the referral through Erie’s electronic health record including patient diagnosis and reason for referral; communicate with providers if any clinical information is missing.
- Verifies patient insurance prior to processing referral using payor platforms.
- Processes referral with the correct hospital contact information and scheduling instructions.
- Send referrals via Fax or Care Everywhere Referral Management (CERM) to the hospital partner for care coordination.
