About The Position

Appalachian Mountain Health (AMH) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) dedicated to providing comprehensive primary care to low-income, medically underserved, and uninsured populations in western North Carolina. Our mission is to deliver culturally competent, high-quality healthcare through a medical home model with adjusted fees based on a patient's ability to pay. This role requires a background check and drug screen.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

Nice To Haves

  • Satisfactory completion of Medical Assistant program or work experience.
  • Experience working with racially and ethnically diverse populations, low-income populations and people experiencing homelessness
  • At least one year of experience in a primary care or public health setting functioning at the full extent of her/his training
  • Fluency in Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Tracking referrals to ensure timely addressing and monitoring until completion, maintaining appropriate documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) including referral outcomes.
  • Completing prior approval/authorization requests for medically necessary services and medications, including contacting payers to meet requirements.
  • Compiling medical and social history relevant to referrals and providing this information to the referred party.
  • Assisting patients in overcoming barriers to accessing care and navigating healthcare systems, such as arranging transportation, enrolling in patient assistance programs, and securing interpretation services.
  • Serving as a system navigator and point-of-contact for patients and families, advocating on their behalf with providers, healthcare organizations, and payers when necessary.
  • Collaborating with programs like Project Access and North Carolina Med Assist to ensure access to medication and services, and identifying/utilizing community resources with cultural competence and patient-centeredness.
  • Establishing and maintaining referral relationships with identified providers and healthcare organizations.
  • Providing front office coverage, including scheduling appointments, checking patients in/out, collecting and verifying demographic information, assessing charges, and collecting fees.
  • Assisting the clinical team as a Medical Assistant, based on education and skill set.
