About The Position

The Referral Associate coordinates and completes referrals within Hospital-based Outpatient Clinics (HBOC). The role includes acquiring and verifying third-party information, obtaining and arranging appointments, and tracking referrals. Work is performed on routine assignments within defined parameters, established guidelines, and precedents. The associate follows established procedures and receives daily instructions.

Requirements

• High school education, GED, or equivalent is preferred.
• Associate’s or technical degree, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience, is preferred.
• Certified Nurse's Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), or medical terminology course is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with ordering providers and nursing regarding insurance authorizations, denials, peer-to-peer review requests, and scheduling difficulties with referrals to providers.
• Take telephone requests for authorizations and prepare referral requests.
• Inform patients of appointment information and instructions.
• Maintain electronic health record (EHR) referral documentation, including documenting actions on specific referrals and adding incoming referrals not generated from the EHR.
• Maintain the referral resource document.
• Schedule referral appointments with the appropriate department or referred-to provider.
• Track patient compliance with referrals and communicate with the referring provider as necessary regarding patients who refuse service or do not attend referral appointments.
• Submit retroactive authorization requests as needed.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
