About The Position

Orange County Solid Waste Management Department has an opening for a Temporary Recycling Materials Handler. This position is responsible for sorting materials received from various collection routes into marketable categories. This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Fitness for Duty Assessment required.

Requirements

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and one (1) year of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of standing, sitting, pushing, pulling, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, carrying, grasping, reaching, talking, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists and feet.
  • Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of department and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of which materials are recyclable and/or reusable.
  • Skill in handling and processing recyclable materials.
  • Skill in operating a truck and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Sorting materials received from various collection routes into marketable categories.
  • Lifting, sorting, and preparing a variety of electronic items for marketing and transport.
  • Collecting recyclable materials from businesses, residences and governmental office buildings.
  • Separating and preparing recyclable materials for market.
  • Pulling out salvageable materials from landfill waste.
  • Inspecting loads of recyclable materials to ensure they meet market standards.
  • Cleaning and maintaining County's twenty-four hour drop-off site and other Solid Waste Convenience Centers on a scheduled basis.
  • Collecting overflow from these sites.
  • Managing overflow and other contamination from sites.
  • Maintaining recycling collection containers/dumpsters at drop-off sites.
  • Preparing items for shipping to market by handling recyclable glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, paper, and electronics.
  • Operating equipment associated with recycling operations including skid steer, forklift, balers, pickup trucks, lift gates and the like.
