About The Position

This role involves acting as a supervisor in their absence, overseeing daily operations, floor workflow, and team assignments. The Recycling Lead Hand is the primary point of contact for operational questions, emergency protocols, and shift escalations. They are responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, adhering to LOTO procedures, and ensuring proper PPE usage. The position also requires active participation in material sorting, safe operation and adjustment of recycling equipment, and quality assurance to ensure materials are processed according to company guidelines. Effective communication with the Supervisor regarding operational changes and staff issues is crucial. Additionally, the Lead Hand verifies shift readiness, trains new sorters, evaluates productivity, and manages staffing needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED desired, but not required.
  • Previous experience serving as an acting supervisor, step-up lead, or senior line worker preferred.
  • Prior experience operating recycling equipment strongly desired.
  • Forklift and Skid Steer operator experience/certification preferred.
  • Ability to take charge of floor operations independently during supervisor absences.
  • Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate with team members and facility management.
  • Strong ability to follow instructions and work efficiently under limited supervision.
  • Ability to safely operate all facility machinery required for the position.
  • Capability to frequently lift and move items weighing up to 60 lbs in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Valid work authorization in the country where the job is located is required.

Responsibilities

  • Step in to oversee daily operations, floor workflow, and team assignments whenever the Supervisor is off-site, on leave, or unavailable.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for operational questions, emergency protocol decisions, and shift escalation issues during supervisor coverage.
  • Complete and submit essential end-of-shift reports, timekeeping checks, and production metric tracking when leading the shift.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all rules outlined in the company’s written safety program.
  • Strictly adhere to Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) procedures at all times.
  • Ensure employees properly sign out all required safety equipment and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while on the floor.
  • Actively work and take a primary sorting position on the material sorting line.
  • Safely start, stop, and operate recycling equipment during normal business operations; directly manage and make operational adjustments to recycling machinery as needed.
  • Ensure all sorting staff are processing materials strictly according to company quality and separation guidelines.
  • Effectively notify the Supervisor regarding material changes, line flow shifts, or employee/personal issues on the floor.
  • Verify that the required number of sorters are present on site prior to shift start times to maintain quality standards.
  • Train new material sorters, continuously evaluate sorter productivity, and request or assign replacements as needed.
