The Solid Waste & Recycling Division is primarily responsible for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the County as required by North Carolina State Law and in accordance with all applicable local regulations. Gaston County currently uses an integrated solid waste management plan consisting of sanitary landfilling, compost/mulch, recycling, and related waste reduction programs.

Requirements

  • Four-year degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related field.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Undergo a criminal background check.
  • Pass a drug screening test prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, staff, and coordinate the operation of six County Convenience/Recycling Centers.
  • Coordinate the hauling of recycle and waste containers.
  • Serve as liaison between convenience site staff and vendors, and County staff for service, repairs, and changes.
  • Coordinate recycling management for County facilities.
  • Implement and manage new programs, vendors, and markets to increase recyclables.
  • Track market trends for recyclables.
  • Manage recycling programs for County residents and County employees.
  • Develop and implement education initiatives including public awareness, civic programming, childhood education opportunities, newspaper articles, and public speaking events.
  • Oversee, plan, and coordinate special events such as HHW, America Recycles Day, and Earth Day; partner with Keep Gastonia Beautiful.
  • Write grants and implement state partnerships, and complete state-required annual reporting with accuracy in data collection.
  • Manage and coordinate the Garb Card Program, including finding and maintaining vendors, taking orders, and delivering weekly.
  • Provide program information to all vendors.
  • Respond to citizen concerns and questions via email, telephone, or in-person meetings.
  • Serve on Carolina's Recycling Association committees and the state HHW Council.
