About The Position

The Recreation Worker, reporting to the Executive Director or Recreation Manager, is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation therapy services for residents. This role supports residents’ overall well-being by promoting meaningful leisure experiences, social engagement, and quality of life. The Recreation Worker performs duties in accordance with their education, demonstrated skills, AgeCare policies and procedures, and the Collaborative Care Model.

Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree or diploma in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Studies, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Eligibility for membership with a recognized professional Therapeutic Recreation association, such as the Therapeutic Recreation Association of British Columbia (TRABC).
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate clearly with residents, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Must be able to provide a current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check, including a Criminal Record Check, or be willing to obtain one.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in recreation therapy within a healthcare or long-term care setting is preferred; experience working with older adults and in gerontology is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assess each resident’s needs, interests, and abilities to support meaningful participation in leisure and recreation opportunities within the facility and the community.
  • Develop recreation therapy goals and treatment plans, and communicate these with residents, families, and members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Collaborate with Recreation Assistants to ensure recreation therapy treatment plans are understood and implemented effectively.
  • Ensure residents participate in appropriate recreation activities that align with their individualized treatment goals.
  • Direct and support Recreation Therapy Assistants in facilitating individual and group leisure activities and programs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including resident charting and recreation therapy assessments.
  • Communicate resident performance, progress, and program suitability within the Recreation Therapy Department and during interdisciplinary team conferences.
