About The Position

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Recreational Therapy Associates are valuable members of our team. They provide regular contact with the residents through individual and group activities. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the department in providing programming that meets the intellectual, emotional and social needs of the residents. The Long Island State Veterans Home, located on the campus of Stony Brook University, is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with a 40-slot Adult Day Care Program dedicated to the care of honorably discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy or Music Therapy.
  • Successfully clear a background investigation.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department.
  • Submit three (3) written references.
  • Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have approved medical exemptions with reasonable accommodations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy or Music Therapy.
  • Certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS), or Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT), or Registered Music Therapist (RMT), or Board Certified Music Therapist( MT-BC).
  • Geriatric Experience.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a functional recreation program with a therapeutic approach.
  • Promote, plan and carry out full recreation programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate resident response to program inclusion and resident safety.
  • Interface with other team members towards comprehensive resident care.
  • Monitor all documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintain supply inventory.
  • Supervise volunteers.
  • Attend Corporate Compliance training and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Corporate Compliance Program.
