About The Position

This UNIFOR position, under the direct supervision of the Adult Day Program Supervisor, the Recreation Therapist is responsible to provide meaningful and innovative recreation programs that meet the diverse social, physical, spiritual, cognitive needs of the clients under the supervision of the Adult Day Program Supervisor. These activities will assist in maximizing and maintaining the client’s optimum level of functioning.

Requirements

  • University Degree in Recreation Therapy and/or College Diploma in Recreation & Leisure Services.
  • One (1) to three (3) years’ experience working on therapeutic programs for the cognitively impaired and frail elderly populations.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certificate.
  • Valid Class 'F' driver’s license for the Province of Ontario.
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours.

  • Computer knowledge would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing a variety of social and therapeutic programs.
  • Communicating with client, family and co-workers to establish an individual plan of care.
  • Observing clients' responses to programs, assessing abilities and progress, intervening in situations when necessary.
  • Engaging clients in activities which correspond to identified needs and interests.
  • Developing a monthly activity calendar in cooperation with the clients.
  • Ensuring that program/activity supplies and resources are available.
  • Liaising with family and/or caregivers as required.
  • Modifying the environment to make it conducive to physical, emotional and social stimulation while maintaining client safety.
  • Acting as a resource person to volunteers and instructing when necessary.
  • Escorting clients to and from program in Program van.
  • Establishing and maintaining program records such as monitoring program participation and attendance by completing daily attendance log.
  • Ensuring that each client has a service plan and a personal file.
  • Maintaining daily vehicle inspection and logs.
  • Maintaining program records to monitor participation and program effectiveness.
  • Promoting the Adult Day Program through a public relations role including actively promoting program to clients, families and the community at large, and including media in special events.
  • Being an active member of the Adult Day Program team which includes supporting the Adult Day Program Mission and Goals, ensuring Policies and Procedures from the Adult Day Program, Valleyview and/or the City of St. Thomas are observed, identifying gaps and communicating the need for new and expanded services, attending in-services, workshops to further professional development, actively participating in monthly team meetings, and participating in the development and implementation of fundraising projects.
  • Performing other duties as required.
  • Taking responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, including working in compliance with the Act, regulations and City policies, using or wearing required equipment, reporting defects in equipment, and reporting contraventions of the Act, regulations or hazards.
