About The Position

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is seeking a Recreation Therapist to provide specialized care to patients with complex mental illnesses using a recovery-focused model. The role involves assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized and group therapeutic recreation programs, including functional and strength-based social skill programs, to support the treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery of a forensic population. The Therapeutic Recreationist will be knowledgeable about the forensic population and contribute to the patient’s Plan of Care as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team. The position is within the Forensics Program, which includes Secure Forensic Services (assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for higher security level patients), the Forensic Rehabilitation Unit (serving both forensic and non-forensic clients), General Forensic Service (assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for lower security level patients), and Forensic Outpatient Service (assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for community-residing patients). While the vacancy is for the Forensic Rehabilitation Unit (FRU) of the Secure Forensic Service, all Recreation Therapists must be able to work in any area of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences as patient needs dictate. FRU also contains a PICA where staff will be required to work and cover.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Therapeutic Recreation
  • 2 years related experience
  • Knowledge of current therapeutic recreation practices, theories, methodologies
  • Current TRO membership required
  • Knowledgeable of recovery and mental illness including treatment practices
  • Ability to implement appropriate treatment, leisure education and participation programs
  • Skills in therapeutic recreation assessment and program design
  • Experience in a mental health setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to liaise with community agencies
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance
  • Ability to perform physical demands of the position
  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) certification
