About The Position

The Town of Smithfield is seeking a responsible and motivated Recreation Supervisor to support the operation of the Town’s summer recreation and beach programs. Under the general supervision of the Recreation Director, this position assists with daily program operations, supervises staff, and ensures that all recreation activities run safely, smoothly, and in accordance with established procedures. This is a seasonal position involving significant public interaction and supervisory responsibility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in recreation administration and/or recreation programs preferred.
  • One to three years of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and maintain routine records.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, tactfully, and professionally with the public and staff.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Recreation Director in the overall operation of the summer recreation programs.
  • Assume full responsibility for program operations in the Director’s absence.
  • Follow and enforce procedures established by the Recreation Director.
  • Safeguard Town property and ensure facilities remain safe and well-maintained.
  • Schedule, assign, and train recreation staff within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Recommend disciplinary action to the Recreation Director as needed.
  • Manage all aspects of the summer recreation program, including beaches, tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, parks, and outdoor ice‑skating rink.
  • Ensure recreation and winter programs operate in a safe and organized manner.
  • Report any major issues immediately to the Recreation Director or designated staff.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with the Recreation Director.
  • Prepare written reports, records, and program materials as required.
  • Interact positively and courteously with the public and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support effective recreation operations.
