About The Position

This position assists professional staff in the care and treatment of patients of a Joint Commission accredited Psychiatric Hospital operated by the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities utilizing recognized recreation, art, and other adjunctive therapies. Implements and evaluates basic therapeutic treatment programs as recommended by the patient’s treatment team to facilitate change in the patient’s behavior. The responsibilities include teaching patients’ skill-building in community integration areas such as independent travel, money management and social intervention. Participate in planned recreation and social programs. Other duties as assigned. This is a tobacco free facility. Chosen applicants must successfully complete a chemical urinalysis and breath analysis drug and alcohol screening test. All employees shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing for probable cause as set forth in Agency and Bureau policies. Must be able to work holidays and weekends. Mandatory overtime is an essential function of this position. Candidate must successfully pass a background screening.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours with at least eighteen (18) hours in health, physical education, recreation, fine arts and/or therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the field of health, physical education, recreation, or fine arts may substitute for the required education.
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) OR certification as a Activity Professional Certified (APC) from the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) may substitute for the required education.
