About The Position

The Recreation Specialist for the Recreation Department Community Affairs & Marketing Division is responsible for supporting the Division Chief and the division Coordinators with the production and execution of various community events, departmental marketing and sponsorship initiatives, and for implementing Culture, Arts & Pride Commission (CAP) programs. This role involves assisting with marketing, community events, sponsorship, and cultural activities. Key responsibilities include facilitating event permit processing, supervising CAP projects and programs, participating in event execution (like the Farmers Market), responding to park-use and permit inquiries, writing and updating various documents, maintaining records, producing promotional materials, updating websites, greeting the public, assisting with registration and payments, and aiding with special projects.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and three (3) years of related work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License.
  • First Aid/CPR, AED and Darkness to Light certifications/training are required within one year of employment.

  • Skill in data processing and being well organized
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and office software including word processing, database, internet and spreadsheet applications

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with various functions of the Recreation Department’s marketing, community events, sponsorship, and cultural activities.
  • Facilitating event permit processing by assembling all necessary information/attachments, routing to proper departments/staff for review/input on required conditions and for securing Division Chief approval before sending to the Executive Office for final approval.
  • Supervising and organizing various CAP projects, programs, and meetings with support from the division Administrative Assistants and Division Chief.
  • Participating in execution of events including supervising Farmers Market event days as needed to support the Farmers Market Manager/Events Coordinator.
  • Responding to general park-use and permit inquiries.
  • Writing and updating reports, letters, forms/applications, work orders, purchase order and credit card authorization requests, and other written correspondence, routing to proper staff for approvals as needed.
  • Maintaining and organizing accurate records by updating files, performing word processing, and computer data entry.
  • Assisting in the production and distribution of flyers, banners, certificates, invitations, and other promotional materials.
  • Assisting with promotion of division activities by updating websites and calendar listings.
  • Greeting public and providing answers to inquiries related to parks, permits, events and other general information.
  • Assisting with registration and sponsor/vendor payments via Rec Trac.
  • Assisting with special projects as needed.
  • Performing other duties as required.
