About The Position

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Support Services, the Recreation Programmer, Inclusion is responsible for supporting the coordination of the Recreation Support Services portfolio that assists individuals who require support/accommodation to participate in programs. This role involves supporting the implementation of the Recreation Support Services one-to-one support program, matching individuals living with disabilities with staff to facilitate a positive, safe recreation experience. The programmer will consult with participants and their advocates to identify interests and accommodations, liaise with recreation and culture staff to match participants with suitable programs, and act as a resource for staff in supporting individuals with special needs or behavioral management concerns. Additionally, the role assists in developing and implementing standard operating procedures, training, and coaching staff to foster a welcoming and inclusive recreation environment. Support is provided to full and part-time staff in developing individual recreation plans and accommodations. The position also assists the Supervisor with hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating part-time staff and volunteers, and provides on-site support throughout the city. Encouragement and assistance are given to staff for program updates and modifications to enhance participant comfort and independent participation. Collaboration with community agencies is key for information, resources, and referrals. Administrative responsibilities are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Physical Education, or related field.
  • Three years or more experience working with persons with disabilities.
  • Three years or more experience with recreation program design and delivery for individuals who live with one or more disabilities, chronic conditions, and/or behaviour management concerns.
  • Knowledge of best practices and key issues related to accessibility and inclusion practices in aquatics, fitness, and community program settings.
  • Must possess exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends at locations throughout the City of Mississauga.
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR C certification
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain High Five ® Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to travel between multiple recreation sites within the city for time-sensitive work-related travel.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point required.
  • A criminal record search – Vulnerable Sector Screening will be required of the successful candidate to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

  • Experience working for a municipality, or government agency in program delivery is an asset.
  • Access to a personal vehicle, preferred.
  • Knowledge of ActiveNet, R3, SAP is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the Recreation Support Services one-to-one support program matching individuals living with disabilities with staff to facilitate a positive, safe recreation experience.
  • Consult with participants and their advocates (e.g., family members, caregivers) to identify interests and accommodations required to support success and participation in recreation and culture programs and services.
  • Liaise with recreation and culture staff to match participants with programs and services that will meet their interests and needs.
  • Act as a resource for Recreation and Culture staff in supporting individuals in programs (i.e., special needs, behaviour management etc.)
  • Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures, training, and coaching /consulting with staff to support a culture of welcoming, enjoyable, safe recreation and culture programs specifically for but not limited to individuals who live with one or more disabilities or chronic conditions.
  • Support full and part-time staff in the development and implementation of individual recreation plans and required accommodation.
  • Assist the Supervisor with the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Provide on-site support to staff and participants throughout the city as required to encourage participation within the scope of the Recreation and Culture Division.
  • Encourage and assist staff to recommend/implement program updates and/or modifications as required based on participant needs, preferences, and experiences with the aim of increasing comfort and ability to participate independently in programs wherever possible.
  • In collaboration with the Supervisor, liaise, communicate, and negotiate with Community Agencies as necessary for information, resources, and referrals to encourage participation in recreation and other community programs/services with appropriate supports and assistance.
  • Complete administrative responsibilities as required and perform other duties as assigned.
