About The Position

The Tukwila Community Center is looking to hire a Recreation Program Specialist to join their team. This role serves as a positive role model and aims to make a difference in the community. The specialist assists with planning, scheduling, and organizing various events, programs, and activities. This is a 1.0 FTE permanent position, eligible for health benefits and retirement.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in related field and three years of related recreation program experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to perform the essential elements of the job.
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, feel, talk, hear, see, and participate in recreational activities for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for equipment handling and activity facilitation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) review conducted in accordance with: Washington State law, Federal motor vehicle safety standards (as applicable), City policies and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to maintain reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during assigned shifts.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 21 years old
  • College-level coursework in Recreation, Education, or related field
  • Preferred experience as a Recreation Leader 1 and Recreation Leader 2
  • Familiarity with recreation program structure, curriculum, or policies
  • 6 months of experience in a supervisory role
  • Ability to speak a second language (Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali) is highly desirable
  • Must be physically capable of assisting and participating in physical activities
  • Previous experience working or volunteering in youth programs, recreation programs, camps, or customer service settings.
  • Must be able to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to submit a clean Driving Abstract
  • Maintain current CPR/First Aid certifications, or the ability to obtain prior to the first day of camp.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, and implementation of a variety of recreation programs, events, and activities serving diverse populations.
  • Coordinate facility and equipment scheduling; oversee specific program logistics including set-up, daily operations, and field trips.
  • Provide direct leadership for assigned programs, ensuring high-quality participant experiences.
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Prepare, maintain, and analyze program records, reports, and schedules.
  • Develop promotional materials and support marketing efforts to increase participation and community awareness of programs and services.
  • Conduct community outreach to promote programs and services; build relationships with participants, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
  • Monitor program budgets and expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Support cost recovery efforts through program promotion, partnerships, and resource development.
  • Ensure programs, events, and operations comply with City policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold operational procedures that support risk management and service delivery.
  • Provide transportation for programs using City vehicles, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Maintain reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Provide direct customer service to participants and community members; respond to questions, concerns, and feedback, and support overall division operations as needed.
