About The Position

The Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT) Department Recreation Program Assistant - Counselor will assist in implementing recreation programs by supervising participants and activities and ensuring a safe and fun environment for all participants. This non-exempt, part-time position requires working on weekdays, nights, and weekends, with a maximum of 999 hours worked per year. The typical workweek is Monday through Friday, with the opportunity to reach up to 40 hours per week with teacher workdays, holiday camps, and other programs.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and enrolled in high school or possess a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Must be able to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
Knowledge of recreational activities, school programs, and children’s camps.
Knowledge of standard safety practices.
Knowledge of procedures and equipment related to recreational activities.
Knowledge of general cleaning techniques related to the area of assignment.
Knowledge of safe handling and storage of cleaning materials.
Skilled in assisting with planning, organizing, leading, and monitoring the activities of children.
Skilled in meeting the physical demands of the job.
Skilled in understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
Skilled in using a computer and related software applications.
Skilled in communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Ability to represent the Town professionally and respectfully while interacting with diverse individuals within the workplace and the community.

Valid Driver’s License (NC preferred)
Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications (preferred)

Responsibilities

Works a non-traditional work schedule, dependent on the hours of the program.
Works with school-aged children.
Provides an atmosphere for participants to complete assigned schoolwork and participate in recreation programs, specialized instruction, and arts and crafts.
Assists in implementing participant activities.
Supervises participants and their activities.
Engages with children in games, indoor and outdoor activities, and arts and crafts.
Assists in maintaining and cleaning facilities and areas utilized by program participants, including picking up trash, cleaning spills, cleaning tables, sweeping, and mopping floors.
Maintains inventory of needed supplies and sends requests to the Recreation Program Coordinator or Supervisor.
Greets parents/guardians and participants in a professional manner.
Assists in chaperoning field trips and activities.
Enforces facility regulations and policies, as well as program regulations and policies.
Ensures an environment of safety for all participants.
Sends reports of accidents, incidents, or damage to the Recreation Program Coordinator and Supervisor.
Always maintains a clean work environment.
Assists all divisions of the PRT department as required.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
