About The Position

Under general supervision of the Public Works Recreation Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work associated with maintaining the Way of Life Facility, Lehi, and Salt River recreation athletic fields and swimming pools. This position also maintains the Way of Life Facility grounds. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and is considered a DRIVING position subject to working on-call and weekend hours. The Recreation Maintenance Worker II is a driving position. The position is distinguished from the Grounds Maintenance Worker positions in that it only services the Way of Life Facility and the Lehi and Salt River athletic fields and pools.

Requirements

  • Experience equivalent to at least one (1) year full time grounds maintenance experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
  • Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
  • Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain simple and concise records and prepare accurate reports.
  • Ability to use work order software to track work order requests.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Ability to make routine maintenance and repair decisions.
  • Ability to use field liners and chemical kits.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to stand and walk approximately 90% of workday.
  • Ability to use cleaners, chemicals, weed killer and fertilizer.
  • Ability to monitor and document pool conditions, chemical levels, pH, temperature, etc.
  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
  • Ability to work in cramp spaces and dusty or extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to reach high work areas by climbing, ladders, steps, or using scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift arms above shoulder to perform work tasks.

  • Knowledge of basic water chemistry for swimming pools.
  • Knowledge of hazards and proper safety protocols when working around bodies of water.
  • Knowledge of standard swimming pool safety precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of custodial and janitorial maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of sports/ballpark maintenance procedures.
  • Skill operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping & facilities maintenance work.
  • Skill operating a riding lawn mower.
  • Skill applying lawn stabilizer and grass seed.
  • Skill using weed-eater, lawnmower, port-a-vac and pool cleaning equipment.
  • Skill using rake, shovel, broom and mop tools.
  • Skill operating and maintaining large commercial pools, chemical feed, pumps, and filtration systems.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of landscape maintenance work at the Way of Life Facility, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, preparing flower beds for planting and planting flowers, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, debris, and dead plants, and ensuring watering schedules are maintained.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation systems and drip lines for the Way of Life Facility and Community’s recreation athletic fields. Inspects, repairs, and replaces items associated with the irrigation systems on a regular basis to ensure ample water is supplied to all grass and plants.
  • Ensures the Way of Life Facility grounds are kept free from trash and debris and trash cans outside of the buildings are emptied on a regular basis. Cleans and removes weeds and debris from all hardscape areas including sidewalks, gathering areas, parking lots, etc.
  • Performs maintenance, repair and upkeep of the Community’s recreation athletic fields, including watering, mowing, trimming, edging, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, overseeding, filling infield holes, and adding clay when necessary.
  • Prepares the Community’s recreation athletic fields for use, including dragging the infield, chalking the field according the specified dimensions, watering the infield, and setting bases.
  • Operates, repairs, maintains, and cleans mechanical equipment for pool operation including water filtration and chemical purification systems, intake and outlet valves, chemical feeders, pumps, seals, vacuum equipment, and metering devices.
  • Provides required maintenance of pool facilities. Checks and maintains chemical balances and water levels. Performs regular maintenance and repair on pool/spa filtration systems, to include backwashing, filter baskets, skimmer baskets, and weir gates. Ensures pool, deck, and associated appurtenances are kept clean.
  • Monitors overall cleanliness of swimming pool common areas, dressing rooms, and associated areas.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.
