About The Position

The Cosumnes Community Services District (District) Parks and Recreation Department is seeking part-time Recreation Leaders for the ExL Afterschool programs, serving students from transitional kindergarten (TK) through sixth grade. This role involves assisting in the planning and execution of various recreational and educational activities, directly supervising students, and ensuring a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment. The position is ideal for individuals passionate about youth development, education, and community recreation, who thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting. Recreation Leaders are responsible for daily program implementation and fostering a positive and inclusive program experience.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment; Certification must be maintained through employment.
  • Knowledge of current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning and implementation process for a variety of children's recreational and education activities relevant to the assigned program area.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of child development and activities that support growth.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of customer service.
  • Knowledge of basic operation of appliances, equipment and office machines including a vacuum cleaner, heating and air conditioning unit, intrusion alarm, calculator, computer, keyboard, cash register, printers and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine.
  • Knowledge of current methods and techniques used in preparing reports and forms, using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions.
  • Ability to effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, EGUSD personnel, CSD personnel and the public.
  • Ability to comprehend and prepare reports such as score sheets, accident, incident, and behavior reports, emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
  • Ability to analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations such as supervising children's activities and trips, caring for children with injuries and resolving conflicts between participants to ensure safety.
  • Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting or standing for long periods of time; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting, and running while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to forty (40) pounds for setting up programs, special events, food preparation, activities, games, and crafts.
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision.
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and recreation related tools such as, but not limited to, scissors, plunger, mop, first aid supplies and hand tools.
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone.
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; may occasionally work alone.
  • Driving: in designated positions - ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units from an accredited college or university in a closely related field to which the position is assigned or proof of passing the Para-Educator proficiency exam.

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise students and maintain staff-to-student ratios (1:20 general, 1:10 TK/Kinder).
  • Lead and facilitate daily activities in recreation, enrichment, and homework support.
  • Support smooth transitions and positive group management.
  • Participate in daily team huddles and follow scheduled lesson plans.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Assists in planning, implementing and leading participants in a variety of recreation programs specific to a program area.
  • Follows cash handling procedures, ensuring policies are enforced and maintained.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment and assures all equipment and supplies are properly stored and secured at all times.
  • Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from CSD and Department policies and procedures manuals.
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public.
  • Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by CSD guidelines.
  • Accountable for all program participants during program hours.
  • Monitors behavior of participants.
  • Conducts set up and clean up of facility and equipment.
  • Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by CSD policies.
  • Attends, and participates at staff meetings and trainings.
  • Completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary.
  • Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with Department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
  • May assist in the on-site communication with parents, participants and the public.
  • May assist with the operation of preparing and selling food including specialty items.
