About The Position

This recruitment is open until filled. The City of Renton is hiring several part-time Recreation Leaders (Levels 1, 2, and 3) to Instruct Youth Enrichment and/or Adult Fitness Programs. Key responsibilities include implementing and overseeing assigned programs and events, delivering excellent customer services, maintaining facilities and supplies, and instructing and assisting participants. Recreation Leaders will also support and facilitate programming and general recreation activities, supervise participants with a focus on safety and education, handle site supervision, program setup and upkeep, officiate/keep score, and provide first aid as needed. Recreation Leaders for Adult Fitness Programs are involved in a variety of sports and clinics, including: Basketball, Cross Country, Pickleball, Volleyball. Recreation Leaders for Youth Enrichment Programs are involved in a variety of activities, including: Art, Games, STEM. Hourly Rates: Recreation Leader 1: $21.57, Recreation Leader 2: $23.00, Recreation Leader 3: $26.00. Placement at the Recreation Leader 1, 2 or 3 level, and rate of pay, is dependent on years of experience and qualifications. Recreation Leader positions may be located at Renton Senior Activity Center, Highlands Neighborhood Center, Renton Community Center, and North Highlands Neighborhood Center.

Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age (Recreation Leader 1).
  • At least 18 years of age (Recreation Leader 2 & 3).
  • Some positions may require at least 21 years of age (Recreation Leader 3).
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Minimum 2 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience related to the designated or assigned recreation program required (Recreation Leader 2).
  • Minimum 4 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience related to the designated or assigned recreation program required (Recreation Leader 3).
  • Some positions may require a Valid Driver's License and successful passing of a required driving record check (Recreation Leader 2 & 3).
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of assigned recreation programs, activities, and services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety guidelines and practices.
  • Skill in overseeing and leading the work of others.
  • Ability to handle conflict and solve problems using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to navigate emergency situations.
  • Work with diverse groups of people in a tactful, effective, and respectful manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the community and program participants.
  • Follow instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to safely perform job tasks in a variety of park and non-park settings.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds on occasion.

Responsibilities

  • May provide direction and oversight to Recreation Leader I level employees.
  • Tasks may include planning, preparing, and implementing athletics, fitness, and enrichment programs for all ages (toddlers to seniors).
  • Provide direction to Recreation Leader I/II level employees.
  • Collaborate with Recreation Coordinator and other city staff as needed to assist with planning, preparing, and implementing recreation programs.
  • Responsible for the designated site location to ensure proper program set-up, security measures and the general cleaning of the facility.
  • Provide support to, and collaborate with, Recreation Coordinator and other city staff as needed to assist with planning, preparing, and implementing recreation programs, specifically youth and adult sports programs.
  • Lead, instruct, and teach participants using excellent citizenship, sportsmanship, and inclusivity.
  • Provide each participant the opportunity to succeed and grow their social skills through recreational opportunities.
  • Understand, explain and uphold program and facility expectations.
  • Ensure program/facility rules, policies and procedures are followed; maintain and enforce safety standards.
  • Responsible for reporting all participant behavioral problems and incidents to appropriate staff and supervisor.
  • Provide attendance and facility reports as required.
  • Attend and supervise program participants during field trips and special events.
  • Provide a positive attitude toward program participants and staff; encourage and serve as a positive role model for program participants.
  • Understand, explain, and enforce facility rules.
  • Keep area tidy, organized, and welcoming to patrons.
  • Assist in coordination of seasonal staff and volunteer schedules.
  • May be responsible for overall program supervision, facilitating activities, site rentals, and field use.
  • May provide direction to other supplemental staff.
  • Assist in defining and recommending program goals and objectives.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and storage of program equipment.
  • Maintain communication with staff, participants, parents/guardian as needed.
  • Administer first aid as needed.
