About The Position

The City of Coronado is now accepting applications for the Recreation Leader. This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies across divisions. The working hours are varied and flexible; employment may be either designated as Seasonal (up to 40 hours per week, not to exceed 89 days) or Temporary (not to exceed 29 hours per week or 1,000 hours per fiscal year). The Recreation Leader title is the mid-level classification for the part-time position series. Leaders mainly support customer-facing activities such as working the front desk, leading programs, or supervising a facility rental. In addition, Leaders provide some supervision of programs and activities and handle some tasks independently. Leaders are supervised by Recreation Specialists, Recreation Coordinators, and Recreation Supervisors. The position offers diverse roles including Front Desk & Daily Operations, Youth Programs and Camps, Adult Programs/Senior Programs, Inclusion, Rental Event Staff, Facility Rentals, Day Trips, Parks & Beaches, and Youth and Adult Sports.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of responsible experience in assigned recreation program area.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in recreation, leisure studies, or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid certificate.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR certificate.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of assigned recreation activities and programs.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of recreation and leisure services program development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of organizing and directing assigned recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of rules and equipment used in various recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping.
  • Ability to implement activities in support of assigned recreation program.
  • Ability to elicit community and organizational support for assigned recreation programs.
  • Ability to effectively handle and diffuse disruptive behavior among program participants.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Ability to interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a CDL license with passenger endorsement is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead a variety of recreational activities involved in the implementation of recreational programs including sports, special events, after-school, day camps, arts and crafts, and other recreational programs and activities.
  • Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of activity and program participants; monitor and inspect assigned facilities for needed maintenance; clean facilities as needed.
  • Supervise and monitor the behavior of activity and program participants; enforce applicable program rules and regulations; provide appropriate disciplinary measures as needed.
  • Participate in promoting and coordinating assigned recreation programs and activities; prepare program event and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets, and brochures.
  • Participate in the development of program activities and maintain a calendar of activities; prepare program activity brochures for public distribution; modify program activities and schedules as required.
  • Evaluate assigned activities and programs for needed supplies and equipment; order or obtain supplies as needed; issue supplies and equipment to activity and program participants; provide assistance in setting up for various program activities.
  • Coordinate field trips and special events; organize transportation to and from events and activities.
  • Participate in monitoring program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.
  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing activities and programs and program effectiveness.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Participate in the development of survey instruments; conduct surveys of program participants to determine participant needs; interpret and record survey results; implement or adjust programs based on survey findings.
