About The Position

The City of Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join their team as Recreation Leaders. This role focuses on providing best-in-class, relevant, and equitable programs and services for Oakland's youth and communities. The department aims to remove barriers to equitable opportunities and encourages innovation within its programs. This is a part-time position with continuous recruitment, meaning applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but the hiring process can take several months. The department values workforce diversity, inclusion, and equity, and seeks employees who understand the impacts of systemic inequity.

Requirements

  • Completion of two (2) years of major college coursework from an accredited college or university leading to a degree in recreation, physical education, kinesiology, dance, art, or a closely related field (unofficial transcripts must be submitted).
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience (equivalent to 4160 part-time hours) participating in a wide variety of recreation activities including sports, arts and crafts, and/or other organized activities.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Ability to operate an automotive vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to travel to various locations or transport equipment in a timely manner.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License (or ability to travel as required).
  • Ability to pass a language proficiency test if selected for a bilingual position.
  • Ability to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, and a tuberculosis (TB) screening upon conditional offer of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin are highly desirable for certain positions.
  • Possession of a valid Basic First Aid certificate.
  • Possession of a valid CPR certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and leading games, free-play, and special activities (e.g., youth development, arts and crafts, dance, music, drama).
  • Coaching and teaching sports programs, sportsmanship, and rules of conduct.
  • Ensuring safety rules are observed during activities.
  • Preparing facilities and setting up equipment for recreational activities/events.
  • Admitting patrons to recreation facilities, programs, and events.
  • Overseeing the use of recreation equipment and facilities in compliance with City rules.
  • Inspecting equipment and supplies for safety and maintenance needs, and reporting issues.
  • Administering CPR and First Aid as needed.
  • Scheduling and coordinating leisure education programs and activities.
  • Assisting with scheduling, coordinating, and promoting special events, programs, and field trips.
  • Taking attendance regularly and completing/maintaining forms and reports (attendance, safety, activities).
  • Providing community members with information on programs and activities.
  • Designing, preparing, and distributing flyers and marketing materials.
  • Performing routine administrative duties using office equipment and software (spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, database).
  • Utilizing automated recreation programs for patron registration, data collection, and analysis.
  • Providing direction and training to other recreation staff and volunteers.
