About The Position

The City of Oakland is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join the Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development (OPRYD) Department as Recreation Aides. This is a part-time position with continuous recruitment, offering opportunities to work with Oakland's youth and make a difference in the community. This role involves supporting recreation programs, maintaining facilities, and interacting with the public.

Requirements

  • Must have participated in organized recreation activities and demonstrated an interest in the leadership of children in play activities.
  • Candidates must be at least sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Safety Focus: Showing vigilance and care in identifying and addressing health risks and safety hazards.
  • Listening: Fully comprehending spoken communication.
  • Oral Communication: Engaging effectively in dialogue.
  • Building and Maintaining Relationships: Establishing rapport and maintaining mutually productive relationships.
  • General Physical Ability: Using strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
  • Customer Focus: Attending to the needs and expectations of customers.
  • Manual Dexterity: Using senses, hands, and fingers in manipulating objects, quickly and efficiently.
  • Candidates who receive conditional offers of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, and a tuberculosis (TB) screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin are highly desirable for certain positions.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning outdoor recreation facilities and areas.
  • Setting up recreation equipment, supplies, and props for programs, activities, and events; assisting with the issuing and collecting of supplies.
  • Assisting staff in running recreation activities and sports programs.
  • Referring questions from the public to designated staff.
  • Admitting members/guest to recreation events.
  • Assisting members/guest in the dining hall or kitchen; setting or clearing table; serving food in the eating area; cleaning and washing kitchen and equipment.
  • Unloading, storing, and stacking supplies.
  • Assisting with maintaining order and discipline among younger participants.
  • Assisting with marking courts and diamonds; performing simple clean-up of grounds and buildings.
