About The Position

The City of Albany is seeking part-time Recreation Leaders II/III to join our Recreation and Community Services Department Friendship Club Program. Employment is anticipated to start August 3, 2026. Friendship Club offers a variety of programs for youth, including an after-school program Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, camps during the year when schools are on breaks and summer, as well as our Junior Counselor program. Positions will be filled at either the II or III level, based on the candidate's education and experience. Recruitment will remain open until all positions are filled and can be closed at any time. Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Six months of experience working in recreation programs (for Recreation Leader II).
  • One year of experience working in recreation programs (for Recreation Leader III).
  • Completion of course work in recreation or in a related field, is preferred.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR/AED certificates.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of background check and TB Test.
  • Positions in this classification independently travel within and outside of City limits to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Positions in this classification require a willingness and ability to work flexible hours and occasional weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of course work in specialized education in a related field, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in teaching or in conducting a variety of recreational activities involved in the implementation of recreation programs.
  • Answers inquiries, provides information, and assists customers at the counter and by telephone.
  • Help customers receive complete information about programs and activities and any applicable policies and regulations.
  • Monitors the behavior of activity and program participants; assists in enforcing applicable program rules and regulations; provides appropriate disciplinary measures as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation of incident and accident reports for various sites.
  • Assists with city-wide events.
  • Attends regular staff meetings.
  • Observes necessary precautions to ensure the safety of activity and program participants; monitors and inspects assigned facilities for needed maintenance; cleans facilities as needed.
  • Ensures the proper use and care of facilities and equipment.
  • Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies to program participants; sets up for various program activities.
  • Interacts effectively and courteously with City employees and members of the public.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements a recreation program or service or serves as a site administrator over an assigned program; supervises all program participants, and/or all children within the afterschool and/or camp programs for assigned site.
  • Leads and trains lower level and new staff.
  • Coordinates day-to-day operations and activities to run daily programs.
  • Answers the more complex inquiries, provides information, and assists customers.
  • Provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to assigned supervisor.
  • Monitors and supervises the activities of patrons of all ages at various sites.
  • Prepares incident, accident, and monthly reports for various sites.
  • Serves as liaison to supervisory staff, employees, the general public, and program participants.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership and instructional skills in area of responsibility.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of recreation programs and activities provided to the public.
