About The Position

Under general supervision, oversees recreation activities in connection with a specific recreation services program or functional area in support of community, recreational, or park facilities. This is the journey-level class in the Recreation Leader series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that Town facilities, recreation programs, activities, and services are safe and effective and provide the highest level of customer satisfaction for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the facilitation of recreation programs and activities. Positions perform full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safety principles and practices, including basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) methods.
  • Knowledge of basic safety precautions and procedures related to recreation program area(s) and facilities.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, basic record keeping, arithmetic, and computer applications related to the work.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, including safe driving rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software related to work.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the Town in contacts with the public.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and Town staff.
  • Ability to learn to work independently while supervising facilities and user groups.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply facility use policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.
  • Ability to lift and move tables and chairs and arranging facilities for community events and/or meetings.
  • Ability to learn basic computer system operation to enter and retrieve data for class registration and facility reservations.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt as job responsibilities change.
  • Ability to handle medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Ability to maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
  • Ability to make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Ability to use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Ability to use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Possess current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates.

Nice To Haves

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade is desirable, plus one (1) year of experience working with the public, preferably in providing recreation or lifeguarding services.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, conducts, and instructs recreational activities, programs and classes; assists in scheduling activities; arranges for facilities and equipment.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment; makes repairs, reports safety hazards, makes recommendations for acquisition or replacement.
  • Conducts a variety of recreational activities including games, arts and crafts, music, drama, dance, or sports and fitness activities, and events.
  • Works as part of a team to plan and conduct special events; performs a variety of tasks including set-up and clean-up, publicity, registration, officiating, front-line leadership, awards ceremonies and customer service.
  • Prepares athletic fields and other facilities for recreation programs and events.
  • Conducts after-school drop-in programs; provides leadership for homework help and recreational activities.
  • Assists with snack bar set-up, shops for supplies; stocks supplies, serves food, takes money; makes change; opens and closes building, and cleans up.
  • Maintains records of revenue, expenses, and attendance for assigned activities and events.
  • Registers participants, files waiver forms and receives and accounts for monies.
  • Answers telephones, dispenses information about recreation programs, and assists with general office tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
