About The Position

Under immediate supervision, provide information about recreation programs to the public; advise patrons of regulations governing the use of a recreational facility; register patrons for classes and/or activities; act as group leader in a variety of games and recreational activities; and assist with set-up and light maintenance of the facility and equipment. This is a part-time position, with a maximum of 980 hours per fiscal year, up to 20 hours a week. The schedule may include various shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts as needed. The salary listed does not include a 2% cost of living increase effective July 1, 2026.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired.
  • At the time of hire, high school diploma or have passed the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) or General Education Development (GED) examination is required.
  • Ability to obtain a CPR and First Aid certificate within one year of employment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Class “C” California driver’s license at the time of employment and maintain during the course of employment.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the following processes prior to starting employment: Interview Process, Live Scan Background Investigation, Pre-employment Physical Examination Including a Drug Screen & TB skin test.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation and/or leadership of recreation programs and activities, including youth supervision.
  • Direct games, sports, arts & crafts and activities at recreation centers and special events.
  • Provide information about recreation programs to the public.
  • Check out recreation equipment to patrons.
  • Develop interest and participation in recreation programs.
  • Register patrons for classes and/or activities.
  • Collect and account for program registration.
  • Teach fundamentals of play and sportsmanship.
  • Issue and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure the safety of participants and staff.
  • Enforce policies and procedures.
  • Administer first aid as needed.
  • Assist in operations and maintenance of a recreational facility such as set-up/tear down of equipment and cleaning.
  • Keep routine records.
  • Complete forms, prepare reports, and compile statistical information.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
