About The Position

Plans, organizes, and supervises the activities and staff of a recreation center or major program within the Parks and Recreation Department.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of planning and providing community based recreational services
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of developing and implementing senior and youth care and related activities and programs
  • Knowledge of budget development and monitoring; program administration
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures, community demographics, and recreational issues
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures of recreation facility maintenance and operations, recreation, cultural, and social needs of the community
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize the activities or program areas
  • Ability to effectively supervise, train, and develop employees
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze findings, and make recommendations; monitor contracts and agreements in area of responsibility
  • Ability to design, implement, and administer programs; prepare reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city staff and the public
  • Ability to interpret and apply city laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to recreation indoor and outdoor events and programs
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participants in meetings
  • Ability to write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information
  • Ability to follow instructions; responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan
  • Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements while being punctual
  • Must possess a basic understanding of computer applications and use that include the Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to obtain Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Certification
  • Ability to obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification within 90 days

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and supervises the activities and staff of a recreation center or major program
  • Participates in establishing goals and objectives for the department
  • Establishes goals and objectives for area of responsibility
  • Participates in planning department budget by preparing cost estimates for budget recommendations, monitors budget for area of responsibility
  • Recruits, selects, trains, and monitors regular and temporary staff
  • Performs on-site program inspections and evaluations to ensure compliance with program and safety policies and procedures
  • Conducts research and analysis, recommends and establishes schedules and fees for programs and events in area of responsibility
  • Investigates and resolves complex or sensitive citizen complaints or problems
  • Conducts assessments on program expansion
  • Recommends renovations to existing facilities
  • Coordinates activities with other departments and outside agencies and organizations
  • Performs research, analyzes findings, and prepares recommendations for change in recreational programming
  • Monitors and evaluates program outcomes
  • Prepares reports on recreation activities and other statistics in area of responsibility
  • Develops yearly program calendar for area of responsibility
  • Interprets and enforces department policies, procedures and regulations
  • Determines distribution materials and methods to promote recreation programs
  • May attend local schools and other venues to present programs
  • Monitor the purchase, use and care of recreation equipment
  • Participates in the preparation of grant applications
  • Acts as liaison to community groups and agencies
