About The Position

This is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Parks and Recreation Superintendent. The Recreation Coordinator performs a wide variety of duties at Adventure Playground located at the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House. Responsibilities include assisting with the supervision and management of the facilities, directly planning and coordinating youth sports, special events, camp programs, summer youth programs, teen programs, and other activities at Adventure Playground and the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House. Additional responsibilities include assist with overseeing maintenance of supplies and equipment, scheduling and supervising part-time and permanent part-time staff, and conducting city-wide special events. The City operates on a “9/80” work schedule and the schedule for this position will be based on seasons with the alternate day off assigned based on program needs. The candidate for this position must be able to work afternoons, weekends, evenings, and July 4. The anticipated schedule for this position is, which is subject to change based on program needs: Summer: Monday-Friday (8:00am-6:00pm) with Friday as the flex day. Fall & spring: Wednesday - Sunday (9:00am – 7:00pm) with Wednesday as the flex day. Winter: Tuesday-Saturday (7:30am-5:30pm) with Tuesday as the flex day. This position is scheduled to receive a 3% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) effective July 2026.

Requirements

  • A degree in Recreation or closely related field plus a minimum of two years experience in a paid recreation position or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid State of California Driver's License.
  • Completion of certified CPR and first aid training must be completed and maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize and implement a wide variety of recreation activities in an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to prepare and distribute publicity materials concerning recreation, teen, youth activities, and Adventure Playground.
  • Ability to select, train, supervise and evaluate part-time employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to think creatively and exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to understand community needs in a variety of recreation areas and adapt a program to meet such needs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with staff city employees and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public groups, agencies, school officials, the media and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to operate recreation programs within allocated budget.
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification is required within six months of hiring.
  • Knowledge of municipal recreation programs and supervision of same.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, needs and principles related to day camp operations and aquatic facilities.
  • Knowledge of techniques or report writing, record keeping, publicity and marketing.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Program and Canva.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, supervise, promote and enhance the Adventure Playground summer camp program.
  • Coordinate, supervise, promote and implement recreation programs and events with an emphasis on experiences at Adventure Playground.
  • Coordinate programs and services associated with the youth community volunteer program, summer volunteer program, summer youth programs and camps, and Teen Action Committee.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate personnel.
  • Provide general information and assistance to the public in-person or on the phone on a day-to-day basis.
  • Prioritize, handle competing demands, be politically astute, meeting deadlines and be open to the suggestions from the community.
  • Maintain, inspect, and recommend the repair, replacement, and maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Oversee and monitor the use of the facility, tools, and equipment per established guidelines; assist clients and provides interpretive information.
  • Oversee, complete, and maintain facility and equipment safety inspections checklists and records.
  • Assist with the monitoring of facility operations and enforce policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Assist with management of contract vendors and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Recreation Division budget and participates in the control of expenditures.
  • Prepare a variety of correspondence including: written and oral reports, memorandums, forms, surveys, and evaluations.
  • Prepare publicity for local cable television, newspapers, department activity guide, city website, and news releases.
  • Develop pamphlets and other similar facility marketing materials.
  • Assist with emergency operations assignments under the direction of Recreation Supervisor, Parks and Recreation Superintendent, or Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Overtime at the rate of one and one half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.
