About The Position

The Recreation Coordinator functions in a professional capacity with clients, co-workers, and the community. The Recreation Coordinator will supervise the youth during recreational activities, allowing the youth an opportunity to improve self-esteem and encourage sportsmanship and positive behaviors. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, instructing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the activities for the youth. The Recreation Coordinator will collaborate with the Director to prepare daily therapeutic activity programs and maintain planned participation in general aspects of daily life skill schedules that align with the youths opportunities to grow physically, emotionally, socially, and develop leisure skills to serve as coping tools when they are no longer in residential care. The Recreation Coordinator will provide leadership and guidance in recreational sessions, where fundamental skills will be learned that promote active, therapeutic and enjoyable programs.

  • Associates Degree and 1 year experience leading recreation or work training programs, required.
  • Direct practice/work with youth in a recreation, residential, juvenile justice, or youth work program setting, 1 year minimum, required.
  • Expertise (through course work or experience) in one of the following areas: Sports, Coaching, Therapeutic Recreation, Job Corps, Outdoor Adventure, Personal Trainer.
  • Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record, abuse/neglect and fingerprint check.
  • Completion of New Hire Orientation at the beginning of employment.
  • All training requirements including Relias at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Current driver’s license, acceptable driving record and current auto insurance.
  • Extensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, and regulations of the program to which the associate is assigned.
  • Valid Driver’s license in state of residency with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age to operate a company-owned vehicle.
  • Must be at least twenty-three (23) years of age to operate a company-owned fifteen (15) passenger van.
  • First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Obtain CPR certification within 30 days of beginning employment and upon renewal date.
  • Proof of valid and current auto insurance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • An emphasis on verbal-de-escalation is mandatory, but the ability to perform physical restraints as a last resort may be needed to keep clients safe from themselves or others.
  • Ability to interact with teenagers, often with a history of trauma and/or adverse childhood experiences who are in Children’s Division care.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for scheduling and managing recreation sessions as determined by the Residential Director as well as creating weekly activity logs, and recreational assessments.
  • Supervise the youth during recreational activities, allowing the youth an opportunity to improve self-esteem and encourage sportsmanship and positive behaviors.
  • Create and follow an annual recreational plan for activities.
  • Complete Crisis Prevention Training annually
  • Prepare and plan diverse activities structured to support Trauma Informed Care using best practice at all times and Evidence Based Practices when possible.
  • Attend training to remain up to date on Trauma Informed Care in residential settings.
  • Responsible for creating a favorable group climate in which the client’s safety, emotional nurturing and healthy development are of primary concern.
  • Maintain knowledge of the behavior program and how it applies to the youth served
  • Maintain discipline and group control at all times, reporting any unresolved conflicts to a supervisor in a timely manner.
