About The Position

The City of Alexandria is seeking a qualified candidate for the Recreation Coordinator position within the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA). This role is responsible for planning and coordinating recreation programs in an assigned community recreation facility, specifically overseeing the Power On and Power Up Afterschool program. The position involves supervisory and professional recreation work, requiring independent judgment in facility or specialized program management. The coordinator will develop and maintain recreational activities for all ages and interests, utilize interpersonal skills for coordinating instructors and responding to public concerns, and supervise staff, volunteers, and summer workers. General supervision is received from a recreation supervisor or Division Chief, with latitude in implementing programs within the assigned area.

Requirements

  • Four-Year College Degree
  • Completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields.
  • Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a Recreation Supervisor I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Knowledge of programming and special event planning.
  • Knowledge of child development.
  • Ability to plan and direct program activities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to generate interest and participation in center activities with various age groups.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and use judgment within established procedures.
  • Experience preparing reports.
  • Ability to organize.
  • Ability to work with a variety of staff at all levels and to handle assignments across sections of the Recreation Services Division.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in overseeing program operations on a daily basis.
  • Prepares program plans, manages programs, and prepares administrative reports.
  • Prepares and maintains a registration database for all programs.
  • Tracks financial and accounting revenue generated by programs.
  • Works varied shifts to cover programs as needed.
  • Supervises seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Recruits, interviews, trains, selects, schedules, and evaluates staff for all programs.
  • Establishes work schedules and assignments for staff, recommends training, completes payroll, and approves leave.
  • Assists in the marketing efforts of programs by coordinating the distribution of registration forms to schools, recreation centers, and other community organizations.
  • Attends school events such as PTA meetings to promote the recreation department.
  • Conducts trainings for all volunteers.
  • Attends various staff meetings related to the programs.
  • Provides information, answers questions and concerns related to programs to the public on a daily basis.
  • Communicates via email with parents, participants, and coaches on programs and registration information.
  • Conducts surveys on all program offerings.
  • Assists in the procurement process of programs by initiating purchases, receiving bid requests, and monitoring monthly accounts.
  • Assists in developing programs and budget duties such as developing the line-item budgets for program plans and developing initiatives to reduce expenditures.
  • Monitors the effective implementation of scheduling of programs and events through on-site visits.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, and certifies all qualified temporary pool staff.
  • Manages staff performance in accordance with Human Resources policies.
  • Maintains staff records, documentation, and reports for associated programs.
  • Performs related work duties as required.
