About The Position

Recreation Coordinators contribute to the development, promotion, and implementation of recreation programs, services, activities, and facility operations that serve community members of all ages. This is a generalist position that supports all Parks & Recreation Department programming and is not assigned to one specific program area. Recreation Coordinators are expected to be flexible and adaptable, assisting with programs, activities, events, and facility operations wherever departmental needs arise. Program areas may include aquatics, fitness, youth and adult sports, youth engagement and activities, community and special events, and other recreation services. Specific assignments and areas of emphasis will vary based on departmental needs, programming schedules, and current priorities. Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others.   • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years' of work experience in the recreation field or any combination of experience, education or training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the described duties.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License; safe driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Recognizing Child Abuse & Neglect (RRCAN) Food Handler's card within six months as appropriate to work assignment
  • Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal, sex offender and motor vehicle records checks. (Internal candidates: a background check may still be required if you are selected depending on timing and components of prior check).

Nice To Haves

  • 2-4 years college degree, preferably in the fields of Recreation, Natural Resources, or a related discipline
  • Spanish language skills

Responsibilities

  • Implements, plans, promotes, supports, and reviews participation and program effectiveness in recreation services, activities and events in various program areas: Fitness: monitors gym equipment, promotes & teaches fitness courses, organizes instructors Youth & Adult Sports: Organizes sports leagues, camps and clinics. Youth Engagement & Activities: Arts and Crafts in Parks, S.T.E.A.M. Classes, Nature-based Learning Programs, First Aid/CPR Courses, Life-skills Instruction, etc. Community & Special Events: Free Movies in the Park, Holiday Celebrations, Volunteer Clean-ups, Astoria Regatta Celebration, Fun Runs, Run on the River ½ Marathon, etc.
  • Contributes to daily facility responsibilities for operations, programming, administrative tasks, maintenance and appearance and performs custodial duties, as needed.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of department goals and objectives based on the direction of the City Council.
  • Interacts in a positive and professional manner with the general public, program participants, community groups, local businesses, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Supports supervisor in the recruitment and hiring process and acts as a trainer for part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborates with community agencies, local businesses and other organizations towards the development of cooperative programming.
  • Performs community outreach to organizations and local businesses to promote, expand, and support engagement in recreation programs in coordination with the Recreation Manager and Parks & Recreation Director.
  • Assists direct supervisor and Parks and Recreation Director with ensuring recreation programs and special events are implemented according to contracts and agreements.
  • Participates in the monitoring of assigned program budgets at the direction of Recreation Manager and Parks & Recreation Director.
  • Assists in drafting professionally written documents for program materials, scheduling, meetings, trainings and other communications.
  • Guides part time staff and volunteers in upholding accountability and expectation standards of the City of Astoria and the Parks and Recreation Department as assigned by the Recreation Manager.
  • Carries out administrative tasks in support of Department operations and interacts directly with patrons and the public to assist in routine clerical activities.
  • Proficiently utilizes the department's recreation software system and point of sale platform to carry out electronic processes and procedures
  • Trains and instructs co-workers in the use of department-specific equipment, processes, and procedures
  • May be assigned use of City vehicle to transport equipment to duty sites.
  • Supports recreational enrichment activities during yearly camps and clinics as assigned by the Recreation Manager.
  • Responsibly tracks and maintains inventory of recreational and sports league equipment and ensures sufficient equipment is available and in good working condition.
  • Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Respectfully takes direction from direct supervisor and Parks & Recreation Director.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in department directives and the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.
