About The Position

Shepherd Village is Toronto’s largest not-for-profit senior community, dedicated to the well-being of seniors since 1961. They are committed to meeting the changing physical, spiritual, and social needs of seniors through quality care and compassionate service. The Recreation Assistant will provide recreation support to the Clients of The Village Club, including assessing client needs, planning, executing, supervising, and evaluating activities.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Recreation, Therapeutic recreation, or other related field from a community college or university
  • Minimum One (1) year experience working in a Seniors Recreation setting required
  • Ability to assist & oversee clients with the activities of daily living, including walking, transfers, and washroom assistance.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work effectively independently
  • Experience designing, planning & executing recreational activities and therapeutic programs for seniors with cognitive impairment
  • Ability to conduct a variety of programs for individuals & groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language required.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude, caring and energetic personality to represent Shepherd Village professionally and positively
  • Able to meet the physical stress of recreational programs with elderly people (ie., bending, lifting, walking, pushing wheelchairs, room setup)
  • Competency in documentation practices and computer applications (ie, MS Word, Excel)
  • MUST be eligible to work in Canada legally for Shepherd Village

Nice To Haves

  • A Personal Support Worker Certificate would be an asset
  • Previous experience in a day program preferred

Responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive resident recreation assessments, computerized documentation and other records, as required.
  • Support residents’ requests and needs to allow them to maintain a level of independence and participate in activities of their choice.
  • Support family, volunteer, student and community involvement.
  • Assist & oversee clients with the activities of daily living, including walking, transfers, and washroom assistance.
  • Conduct a variety of programs for individuals & groups.
  • Meet the physical stress of recreational programs with elderly people (ie., bending, lifting, walking, pushing wheelchairs, room setup).
