About The Position

Plans, organizes, conducts, and directs a variety of recreational activities at a recreation facility or park site. This role involves planning, organizing, scheduling, conducting, and directing recreation activities in specialty program areas such as sports, arts and crafts, senior citizen recreation programs, special events, and therapeutic recreation programs. The position also requires maintaining attendance, activity, and financial reports, ordering supplies, resolving public inquiries and complaints, working with community groups, preparing promotional materials, registering participants, training staff, enforcing policies, and participating in community activities. Additionally, the role involves ensuring facilities and equipment are in good order, clean, sanitized, and free of hazards, while maintaining courteous and respectful behavior towards the public and colleagues.

Requirements

Knowledge of methods and techniques of program planning and objectives of public recreation
Knowledge of the rules, regulations and tournament bracketing governing various competitive athletic games such as softball, baseball, basketball, volleyball and table games
Knowledge of a variety of active and passive games and activities suitable for children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens and/or special populations
Knowledge of the tools and techniques of teaching crafts, sports, and other recreational/leisure time activities
Knowledge of City policies and procedures, community demographics and recreational issues
Knowledge of the use and care of parks and recreations equipment, materials and facilities
Must possess computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participates in meetings
Ability to write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information
Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan
Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city staff and the public
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification and first aid certification
Valid Driver's license

Nice To Haves

American Red Cross and Lifeguard training certification preferred and required 30 days from date of employment
Associate's degree (A.A) or equivalent from two year college or technical school, or two to three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

Maintains and prepares periodic attendance, activity, financial and special reports regularly and upon request
Orders supplies and materials
Resolves requests for information, complaints about services, suggestions for operational improvement
Works with community groups, schools, to initiate and implement programming
Prepares and distributes flyers, posters, and other advertisement for area programs
Performs on-site participant registration for recreational activities
Trains part time and temporary staff
Enforces and explains policies and procedures to patrons in all areas
Participates in community activities
Maintains records and prepares reports, brochures, and informational materials relating to program assignments and financial and activity records
Assures facilities and equipment are in good order and arranged to meet the requirements of users
Assures facilities and equipment are clean and sanitized and free of hazards
Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and shall make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance
Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties or in the presence of a member of the public
Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group
Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official or any other person or any agency of the City of Columbia
Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time
Performs other related duties as required
Leads and teaches a variety of on site recreational activities
