About The Position

Goodwill Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (GWNYNJ) is seeking an experienced Recovery Counselor to provide individual/group counseling and other direct services for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness in a person-centered, recovery-oriented environment, in accordance with NYS OMH Part 512 Regulations. The role involves managing a caseload, conducting various assessments, developing and implementing Individualized Recovery Plans (IRPs), and maintaining electronic health records. The counselor will also facilitate groups, conduct individual counseling sessions, document progress, coordinate treatment with other agencies, and provide services based on Evidence Based Practices. This position is part of an interdisciplinary treatment team and requires maintaining client records according to Medicaid and Office of Mental Health standards. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining relationships with external providers and family, and carrying a 24-hour support cell phone in rotation with the team. Activities are subject to change to meet business needs.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in the disciplines of Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Creative Arts (Drama, Music, Dance, Media), or Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Candidate will have or be eligible for licensure, certification or registration in the specified area of expertise.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree for a NYS Registered Nurse.
  • Team-based skills are essential.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with psychiatric/co-occurring disorders preferred.
  • Knowledge of running groups preferred.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of service documentation required.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required; screening for the GSA, OIG and OMIG lists of persons disallowed from working in Medicaid funded programs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of up to 25 consumers, including case management, collateral contacts, referrals, vocational assistance, and other needs, to coordinate services.
  • Conduct required assessments including Wellness Recovery Action Plans, Psycho-socials, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Vocational Readiness, Cultural, and Substance Use screenings and assessment.
  • Develop Individualized Recovery Plans (IRP) in collaboration with participants, based on the above listed assessments on a quarterly basis, or more often as needed.
  • Maintain and update demographic, treatment and employment data in electronic health records (Foothold AWARDS, OMH CAIRS database, and NYESS).
  • Actively participate in maintenance of Seamark PROS assuring cleanliness in the kitchen and common spaces.
  • Develop and facilitate approximately 8 -10 groups, according to protocol and curriculum, which will cover CRS, ORS, IR and Clinical Services as dictated by the IRPs of the program participants.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions to assist program participants with attainment of the life role goals specified in their IRPs.
  • Document consumers’ progress towards goals in monthly progress notes and determine the need for addition or subtraction of services offered to each participant on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate treatment including the sharing of Individual Recovery Plans and Progress Notes for participants who are co-enrolled with other agencies.
  • Provide services according to Evidence Based Practices including Wellness Self Management, Family Psychoeducation (CCFC), Medication Management, Co-occurring Disorders (IDDT), and Supported Employment (IPS).
  • Coordinate follow-up services once a participant is ready for discharge from the program.
  • Act as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, including participation in weekly administrative, clinical and utilization review meetings.
  • Assume overall responsibility for maintenance of client records, including timely documentation of services in Electronic Health Record (AWARDS), as required by Medicaid and the Office of Mental Health.
  • Develop and maintain collateral relationships with consumers’ other providers and family as clinically indicated.
  • Carry a 24 hour support cell phone in rotation with the clinical team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Responsibilities will be conducted in accordance with standards and procedures required by funding sources and Goodwill. Tasks include, but not be limited to, record maintenance, individual and/or group counseling, with participant implement Individual Recovery Plan, provide participant services in specialization areas, such as substance co-occurring disorder, wellness, vocational/employment, family and other related therapeutic and evidence-based services. Records and reports will be kept as assigned and in keeping with program regulations.
