About The Position

The Recess Paraprofessional will support the safety and well-being of students during recess and outdoor activities. This role involves supervising students, providing positive guidance, ensuring appropriate behavior, and assisting with any physical or emotional needs that may arise during the school day in accordance with AVA policy and procedures. All employees of AVA work together to fulfill the AVA mission and vision statements. Requirements

• High School Degree
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, policy and expectation documents, staff agreements, evaluation requirements, curriculum/materials, and student assessment documents.
• Ability to effectively document office observations, analyze data to improve office and health room practices and correspond with staff from all levels.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions for implementing IEPs, health plans, and behavior protocols with high fidelity
• Strong commitment to student dignity, safety, and promoting the maximum level of independence for all students
• Willingness and ability to assist students with personal care, toileting, and mobility, including lifting and transferring (with appropriate training and assistance)

Responsibilities

• Supervise students during outdoor recess, lunchtime, and other break periods to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
• Maintain a safe environment by monitoring students at all times, including in play areas and when transitioning between activities.
• Ensure that students follow school rules, interact respectfully, and resolve conflicts in a positive manner.
• Ensure that playground and outdoor equipment is safe for student use and report any maintenance issues to the appropriate staff.
• Respond appropriately in case of accidents, injuries, or emergencies, following established school protocols.
• Provide positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior and address minor behavioral issues with fairness and consistency.

• Perform other duties as assigned
• Assist with student positioning, transferring (e.g., from wheelchair to stander, floor to chair), and mobility using specialized equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, walkers, lifts, standers).
• Monitor and provide delegated health care procedures, which may include seizure monitoring, administration of emergency medication (e.g., Diastat, Epipen), or basic first aid, following all required training and protocols.
• Maintain a safe and clean learning environment, including cleaning/sanitizing equipment and materials used for personal care and instruction.
• Closely supervise students during transitions, outdoor activities, and during mealtimes to ensure safety and prevent injury.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
• Support the implementation of Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals in collaboration with the Special Education Teacher, including academics, functional skills, communication, social skills, and vocational training.
• Provide support to students with Significant Support Needs (SSN) across settings, including general education environments, by ensuring access to accommodations, reinforcing academic instruction, and implementing behavior management strategies, regardless of EEO status
• Support students with daily living and functional skills, including but not limited to, dressing, feeding (including G-tube feeding as trained and delegated), toileting/diapering, and personal hygiene.
• Aid students in using various communication methods, including sign language, picture exchange systems (PECS), and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.
