About The Position

Wissahickon Charter School is seeking dedicated Recess and Afterschool Program Teachers to create a safe, engaging, and fun environment for students. This role involves planning and facilitating recess activities, ensuring student safety and positive behavior, and providing academic and social-emotional support during the afterschool program. The ideal candidate is flexible, creative, and passionate about working with elementary and middle school students.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least two years of experience working with elementary and/or middle school students, ideally in a school or at camps.
  • Dependable, with a good record of attendance and timeliness.
  • A relationship builder; able to build effective relationships with students.
  • All applicable clearances required by law including current FBI clearance (DHS and PDE), Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Clearance, NSOR, Mandated Reporter training, and proof of a negative TB test.
  • Receptiveness to feedback, positive attitude, and a desire to continuously improve.
  • Belief in Wissahickon Charter Schools' mission, and the belief that all children can learn and succeed.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, monitor, engage, and facilitate recess for all students, including planning and implementing activities and games.
  • Ensure students meet behavioral expectations and are safe at all times, mediating conflicts.
  • Be present outside with students during recess, regardless of weather conditions, with indoor recess provided for inclement weather or extreme temperatures.
  • Remain engaged, nurturing, and excited about recess with the students.
  • Create and maintain a safe, nurturing environment for students to flourish socially, emotionally, and academically.
  • Design a daily agenda, including time/space management for the afternoon program.
  • Consistently implement daily rituals, rules, and consequences for group management.
  • Provide whole group, small group, and individual academic support and enrichment.
  • Check that homework is completed correctly and neatly, reporting severe academic struggles to the coordinator and parents/guardians.
  • Communicate openly with the Recess and ASP Coordinator regarding group progress, individual students, and needs.
  • Take daily attendance and maintain clear, accessible weekly attendance records.
  • Gather and distribute snack materials.
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians.
  • Clean up and straighten the ASP space at the end of each afternoon, ensuring classrooms are left clean.
  • Report observations of students struggling socially or emotionally to the Recess and ASP Coordinator and parents/guardians.
  • Participate in daily team huddles, team planning meetings, and professional development.
  • Take school walkie-talkie and whistle to the park or playground at all times for emergencies.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records in the incident report log.
  • Complete an incident report form immediately after any incident and send a copy home with the student the same day.
  • Enjoy the students and have fun.
