About The Position

Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to eligible individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties, as well as to farm workers statewide. Since 1966, FRLS has been dedicated to justice, offering legal services in housing law, family law, consumer protection, public benefits, elder law, disaster relief, education law, tax advocacy, and more—at no cost to our clients. FRLS partners with community organizations and pro bono attorneys to provide quality advocacy, outreach, and education aimed at protecting the rights of those in need. For over 50 years, FRLS has been a steadfast advocate for justice. The receptionist will be available from 8:30am – 5:00pm, M-F to greet visitors to the office and answer the phone. They will lend administrative and secretarial support to all office staff. The administrative duties of this position are as follows but may be altered at the discretion of your immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to forge positive relationships with prospects, colleagues and the community.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently maximize the use of existing resources.
  • Must be able to effectively work in high pressure situations which involve deadlines.
  • Proficient in English

Nice To Haves

  • Some knowledge of the legal system, commitment to the mission of FRLS and compassion for the clients, preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors who enter the office and direct them appropriately.
  • Sort, date stamp, and distribute incoming mail.
  • Copy, collate and scan documents brought by clients and as requested by staff.
  • Refer prospective clients who cannot be served by the agency to the appropriate service provider including any available outreach center or Florida Bar services.
  • Perform word processing and occasional typing assignments as requested.
  • Assist in community events.
  • Maintain and prepare statistical information relative to clients.
  • Answer incoming calls and transfer the call or send a case note to the appropriate staff member, if covering the intake line.
  • Screen prospective clients in an emergency. Maintain case files as other duties allow.
  • Take outgoing mail to the post office daily.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
